Device Not Connecting to PC

Has anyone dealt with Garmin devices not connecting to your PC who could offer advice? My Garmin doesn't connect easily at ALL...I have to unplug and plug it in at least 4 times, tonight it's been about 50 times before I finally got it to connect to the PC to put this weekend's. Once it IS connected, I literally cannot touch or move it otherwise it disconnects.

Try a different USB port, different USB cable or different computer.

First suspect clearly is the cable, however I have had problems with some USB ports. On my desktop PC, every one of the ports suppled by the motherboard gave poor results with any Garmin device. I fitted a separate PCI card with 4 more USB ports & they are rock-solid.
