Do you have as "two separate activities" created in G Connect?

I am shopping these days for some deals (unsuccessfully so far) to get myself a dedicated Edge GPS (the Explore comes to my mind first) unit with active mapping for my longer gravel bike trips.
Last year I was tracking all my activities with Vivoactive 3, the extracted data looks pretty decent for my expectations in Garmin Connect, I am not walking/running or biking races neither doing Strava (or similar), so for my own fitness purposes this was working good enough.

Just ran into one older post (from early 2018 - Garmin Connect / Feature Request) people saying that - got two separate activities biking with Fenix watches and Garmin Edge bike computers.
Some suggesting to keep tracking the activity with a wrist watch (this is kind of Garmin natural philosophy) and use the Edge gps unit as a slave only - for mapping/routing.

Speculating now, then why would I cash out a larger chunk $$$ to get a decent behaving Edge GPS unit , instead I could just buy some better cellphone holder and use google for my cycling routes?

Anybody can chime in with experience? Can the Garmin Connect - or any of these gizmos - to be set in a way not to double the activity in Garmin Connect?
Because this makes me sad, I like toys as well :)
  • I regularly ride with 2 devices. I use the FR735XT on my wrist, and additionaly have an 310XT mounted on the handlebar. The reason for it is that a wrist-worn device is hard to read while riding.

If you start a timed activity on one of the devices, and not the other, then you will have only one activity in garmin connect. Alternatively you can start the activity on both devices (if desired for some reason), and then save it on one device and discard it on the other. I use the latter solution. I start both devices, but then discard the activity on the 310XT. And that's the most obvious method of avoiding double activities.
  • Yep, it's easy, just do not upload on of the activities.

Alternatively, there is a website that clains to combine .FIT or .TCX files.

There a a couple of reasons I do not use a mobile phone as a gps unit on a bike. First, if the phone pops out of the mount, it will probably damage the phone and repairs could be expensive. More impotantly, the battery life of the phones i've owned was not good enough for long rides. And I use the phone in case of emergencies, so I don't want my mobile phone dead when I need it.
  • No phone screen available has the good visibility of Edge screens in sunny conditions.
