Firmware 4.1

I noticed Firmware 4.10 is available a few minutes ago.

There are 4 issues addressed:

1. Battery charge stuck at 100% addressed;
2. Location data deleted up synch addressed;
3. Temperature data no longer written to activity data field; and
4. Fixed issue that Trailforks app failed to download course

I loaded the Location.fit file from my Edge 800 to the NewFiles folder. Locations were there after transfer. I downloaded a course from Garmin Connect and transfered to the Edge Explore using Garmin Express. The locations survived the synch. Hopefully tohers can confirm the location works now
  • ...can we see on the device which version of the maps is installed?

You can determine which maps are on the device and which are enabled using the menu system:

    Menu> Ride Settings> Map> Map Information

Still waiting on a response from Garmin Support but have managed to resolve the issue - I had to do a factory reset (hold lap and start / pause then press power and release the buttons when the flash screen goes) - then ran through set up and managed to get the install to work. Not sure if this was the cause, but the first time I tried I followed the prompts to pair with my phone - it only did the update when I didn’t pair it with the phone first. Not sure if it was a coincidence and it was just persistence, but for me this is what worked

Bingo, this worked for me too. Do the same hard reset, but DO NOT pair with your phone via Garmin connect. Simply skip this part. After that it installs correctly. So the full process in a nutshell

    1. First connect your EE to Garmin Express on your pc (your EE should be on the older firmware). Let the new firmware download as normal.
    2. After sync finished disconnect your EE. It will boot up and prompt you with the new software update. If you click yes to install it will power off (which is the issue on hand)
    3. Do a hard reset by pressing the lap and start/stop buttons at the bottom simultaneously. Whilst keeping them pressed press the power button and release it immediately. Once the screen turns ON you can release the lap + start/stop buttons at the bottom.
    4. Now when it starts up SKIP the phone pairing process. It will again prompt you that new software (v 4.10) is available since the GUPDATE.GCD file still exists on your EE. Just press YES to install it. It will now install normally and your EE will not power off as it did before.
    5. Now you are free to pair your phone

thanks very much - worked for me also. A PITA to re-setup all the data screens - so hopefully this is not a common occurrence...
  • And what if you first disable the connection to your phone (Settings / Connected Features / Phone - Disable) before connecting the EE (USB) to the PC and updating the software to 4.1 via Garmin Express?
I do not use my EE with a connected phone and the update went without any problem. No extra reset and re-entering my settings needed.

And what if you first disable the connection to your phone

I have tried that but it didn't help. I'll personally wait for Garmin's feedback to my support request before resetting. I can live with 4.0 for the time being.

  • I had the same issue with updating but was able to get it to work without a Reset: I disabled the connection to my phone (Settings / Connected Features / Phone - Disable), rebooted the device, then went into System > About and did the update and it finally went to the boot loader instead of turning off. The disabling the phone connection and rebooting seemed to do the trick, thanks @bikepc01
Maybe this was there before, but now I see options to get Social/Other notifications (emails etc) now ... cool.

I tried disconnecting from the phone but that made no difference. i didn't try the device > phone > disable option.

I did get a reply from Garmin Support today. Since I resolved it with the hard reset I obviously haven't tried this directly - although had deleted the gcd files during my earlier troubleshooting.

    -----------------------------------

I am sorry about the issues you are having today. I would be happy to work with you towards a resolution today. This behavior is most commonly due to a corrupt update file. We'll need to remove the file then sync to get another copy of the update file. To do this, your device needs to be plugged into the computer and seen as a drive.
*Please sync your device using Garmin Express before proceeding. (All your activity history, workouts and courses will be deleted off your device.)
    Windows:
    • Press the Windows + E keys on your keyboard.
    • Open the Garmin drive.
    • Open the Garmin folder.
    • Right click and delete the gupdate.gcd.
      • Delete any .temp/.tmp or .bak/.bin files as well, if listed.
      • Open the RemoteSW folder and delete any .gcd files.

    • Empty recycling bin (trash can).
    • Right click Garmin drive.
    • Select eject.
    • Remove your device from the charger.
    • Let the device power on to its normal screen.
    • Power down the device.
    • Connect device back into the computer.
    • Attempt to update software through Garmin Express. If applicable.

Matt - interesting to see their response. As I had the same symptoms but DID NOT delete the gcd files, I am certain, at least in my case, that the cause was not a corrupt update file but a bug preventing update from 4.0 to 4.1 while having my phone set up on the device. As above it was resolved by doing a factory reset then applying the update before pairing with the phone.

Thank you for these clear directions. It worked perfectly for me. EE now shows 4.10, and I also have the new notification options.
