Has my Edge Touring Bricked?

Trying to update to new maps, etc per Garmin Express, got error that needed more room. Deleted the map files, and system wouldn't recognize the device. Unplugged the device, replugged it into the computer, and now it's stuck at "Loading Profiles", and won't go any further.
Help?
  • First... there is a separate forum for the Edge Touring in the Edge Archive section: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into...dge-touring-ab - now you are in the section for the Edge Explore.

Your question: looks for me that you have deleted more files than only maps. If you see "Loading profiles" the device seems not to be bricked, so that's hopeful for a solution.
My advice would be to force a hard reset and then try to update the Garmin Cycle Map (latest EU version is 2018.10). After the reset let GE repair the file system on the Edge and for now ignore the map update. At first power-on you will have to enter your personal settings again.
The Edge Touring is sold with the whole Cycle Map on a separate micro-SD-card of 8 Gb. The capacity of this card is too small for the 2018.10 map, so you need a card of 16 or 32 Gb.
Because all files of the Cycle Map are on the sd-card you do not need - or better - you should NOT DELETE files from the device itself to make room for a bigger Cycle Map!

What I did is copy the whole content of the original micro sd-card to a new card with larger capacity (16 or 32 Gb, formatted as FAT32). Then a little trick that still works: copy the file GarminDevice.xml from ..\Garmin on the device to ..\Garmin on the Sd-card. Insert this SD-card to the sd-card reader of your PC - without the Edge being connected via USB! - and Garmin Express will recognize the SD-card as a device and will update the maps if an update is available. If the update is ready you can use the new sd-card in your device.
Please note that GE has a bug related to the Edge Touring: also if you have already the latest version 2018.10 of the Cycle Map, GE will persist to offer an update to the same version. So check under 'details' the offered map version that GE offers. Be aware however, because a new map version 2018.20 will be released soon - the US-canada version is already available, EU will follow soon.
  • Unfortunately, there is nothing in the Garmin folder on the device, or the SD card, I've got a request into Garmin, and they're hopefully going to help me. Sorry about the incorrect forum, perhaps a moderator can move this into the correct area.
  • Did you try the full reset?

    Switch off the device
Hold down Lap and Start / Stop buttons
Turn on the device while still holding both buttons down
Hold the keys until the Garmin "splash" screen appears
Release the buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears

The reset is successful once enabled, the device enters the first setup wizard. Once the reset and setup wizard are complete, place the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to obtain satellite data. Then you can continue with the set-up.

I tried that several times, and nothing. I contacted Garmin, and they had me check it out in a Windoze machine, and try to see if the "Scan & Repair" function would work, it didn't. So then they had me go into the drive in Windows Explorer, and format it. I'm thinking "Oh oh, this can't be good", and sure enough, it wasn't. Drive is totally blank now, and still hanging up on the "Loading Profiles" page. Only difference is that now that the unit is beyond repair, they want me to pay $69 to have it replaced. Not really happy at this moment, currently using the device as a paperweight.

  • There is a procedure using a RGN-file and the Garmin (Windows!) program updater.exe to repair a bricked device like yours. The program updater.exe re-installs the internal system using the RGN-file as the data source for that. You need to start the GPS in service / pre-boot mode following a special procedure.
You could ask Garmin Support to send you the needed files and the procedure info. Because your Edge is empty now, also ask for a ZIP-archive containing the file system to be able to re-generate all folders and files on the Edge Touring.
To be honest, I doubt if Garmin will help you with this however. I know from a certified Garmin repair representative that the procedure exists. Maybe ask your seller if they can do the trick for you?

Thanks for this information, I've asked the support person for the information, and since I have 20+ years in the computer world, I would not hesitate to apply this procedure, after all, what's the worst that could happen? LOL
    Thanks again
