Feature request: option to turn off Course Turn Guidance

Like in the early days of the Edge Touring (Plus) the new Edge Explore seems to lack the option to disable the "Course Turn Guidance" (i.e. Turn-by-Turn Guidance). It would be very desirable having this option when you don't need or don't want to get the in some circumstances distracting warnings, preferably independant of the option to enable / disable the Off Course Warnings. Also you don't have to wait for the sometimes rather long calculation

In the Edge 800 you can set the option to dis/enable the Off Course warnings independently of the Course Turn Guidance, while in the current Edge Touring these two options are linked. The freedom of choice like in the Edge 800 gets more points...

I have tried the different Routing Modes like 'Road Cycling', 'Mixed Surface Cycling' and 'Gravel Cycling' and in all modes the Edge Explore starts to calculate the course after you have pressed 'Ride'. So sadly there seems no option present to choose not to get the Course Turn Guidance. So please Garmin implement this option in the Edge Explore too, together with the option to dis/enable the Off Course warnings.

Edit: typo
  • And I would also add setting to control the 'Sharp Turn Ahead' warnings that someone thought was a good idea to have ALWAYS turned on. (Even when not navigating a course)
  • The learning curve continues...

It appears that the feature I requested having an option to disable the Course Turn Guidance warnings is already there!
    - From the main menu select 'Courses' / 'Saved Courses' - then you get the list of your saved courses.
    - Open the 'hamburger menu' in the lower right corner and there you have the Course Options to enable / disable the Turn Guidance and even too the Off Course Warnings.

It works as expected. In some occasions there is a small delay before the selected course is displayed on the map after you have activated the course with 'Ride'.
So be aware that there are two places where you can select course options:
    - the 'hamburger menu' I mentioned above
    - after you have selected an individual course through 'Courses' / 'Saved Courses' there is a more or less hidden option 'Settings' that gets visible pressing the down arrow under the big 'Ride' button. Under 'Settings' you have an option to display 'Course Points' if they are present in your course. Some more options are available there (Always Display & Color).

It's even in the manual at page 4 under Course Options. A case of RTFM... :o

I'm very satisfied with my Edge Explore upto now, but there is still a wishlist for some features and reported bugs that have to be resolved - those are posted elsewhere in the Edge Explorer's thread. :)
  • If you select a course, there is also the option to "always show course" which disables all routing entirely which I woud think is the most battery friendly option if you consider long-distance touring. There will be no remaining distance or ETA, but if an occasional glance on the map is enough, I would think this is the way to go. (Another option would be to not even record the ride and send the device to sleep while not in use)

    I suppose this was meant with a ;) ?
My feature request was posted because I like to ride my courses without Course Guidance, but with Course Points. In first instance I missed the option to disable Course Guidance, but I'm happy that I found the option.
  • I was thinking about cases where the availability of energy is sparse (bike-packing/touring e.g.) the sleep function is very welcome and not available in the etrex models where booting takes a very long time. While biking though I can imagine few scenarios where I wouldn't want to record the ride :-)
  • You can also ride a course with prepared waypoints and the option routecalculation switched off. You will get turnbyturn warnings (when the course is well prepared) and don't have to waite for route calculation. But the turnbyturn warning are late, the edge 520 did a better job. I returned my edge explore and will buy something else.
