How Capable Is This Device?

I just received an email about the Edge Explore. The case appears to be the same size as the Edge 1030. The price is half the Edge 1030! The overview says it works with Garmin lights and radar, that it has GPS navigation and the Garmin cycling map, etc.

What does it leave out, that allows it to be priced so much lower?

No Strava Live Segments, No Power meter support, just matter of software, HW is probably the same :) Typical Garmin :D Ok, there are two HW related features - no SD card, no external battery pack support, but who needs it and anyway I believe CPU supports SD card as well :)

DC Rainmaker also says no support for Extended Display with a watch either.

No, Garmin say 12 hours v 20 hours of the 1030. The screen is smaller than the 1030 - 3" v 3.5". No Glonass or altimeter. It doesn't support eTap gear display, which is a shame for me, but it still seems to be a bargain for touring. Much as I love my Bolt, I'm tempted to sit this by the side for when I'm doing more than training runs.

No barometric altimeter. No interval training or training plans of any kind.

Well, mine arrived this morning and I've wasted an hour trying to connect it. By their cable - Express can't find it and it won't mount on the Mac desktop. By bluetooth, iOS Connect App can't find it. So that's it really, not very capable at all! However, I will say that the screen is very responsive and fast, pretty much like a mobile.

Mmm, just reset it and now its frozen on the splash screen, can't do anything except put it back in the box and return it. Best to stick with my Bolt.

This model isn't listed on the iOS Connect App.

Apparently the recognition issue is resolved, as confirmed by the ever helpful DCRainmaker - some units shipped faster than Garmin anticipated and the update to allow pairing to Garmin Connect Mobile and Garmin Express wasn't live.
