Big disappointment with the GarminExplore 820

Below is the message I sent to Garmin after-sales service:

"Gentlemen, I made the purchase of a Garmin Edge Explore 820 at the end of June 2017, at V?lo 77, at Claye Souilly, in order to make a Paris / Issoire route in the Puis de D?me 63). Before leaving I did some tests in order to familiarize myself with the device. I noticed during these test runs that, without any reason, (without manipulations on my part), several times the device "crashed" (no more control possible). I was then forced to reset by keeping the on / off button pressed for a few seconds. Considering that this was a manufacturing defect, I brought the camera back to the store and exchanged it for the same model. I soon found the same bugs on the new device. The day of my departure being not modifiable I made my journey of 550 km supporting this handicap which occurred, on average, 3 times every 50 km, I could also see failures in the "economy mode of the battery ": sometimes the screen did not turn on automatically when approaching the crossroads with change of direction or simply, the economy mode no longer worked at all. These random failures never occurred as a result of manipulations on my part. To remedy this, I had to switch the device off and on again and, if it did not work, reset it by holding the on / off button for several seconds (fortunately this maneuver did not cause any loss of previous data). You will understand that I am very disappointed with my purchase and I expect you to exchange my Garmin Edge Explore 820 against another model without these defects,

After this mail, they replaced my device, From the first try the same trouble began again.

I note that I made the updates regularly for the 3 devices,
The routes installed in the device had been prepared on the Garmin Connect site.

I found reports of these defects on different forums.
In conclusion I strongly advise against the purchase of this model.

I had very similar problems with my 820. I brought it back to the retailer who contacted Garmin, performed an update and returned it to factory settings. The problems continued....frozen screen, won't turn on, won't shut off, can't get the start button to work, it doesn't capture grades or climbing and I can't upload routes from ridewithgps. Finally, the start button failed completely yesterday and it is back with the retailer Danny's Cycles in Scarsdale. To say the least, I am extremely disappointed with the 820. My 800 never had these problems. I'm cautiously optimistic that my 820 will be replaced immediately.

Not very helpful. There will always be faulty goods sold, and they can be returned, replaced, or repaired by law. And why do people still not understand, that the legal requirement for dealing with faulty goods is between the customer & the retailer, not the manufacturer. The majority of users, like me, have had no problems with the 820, and find it hugely enjoyable and useful, and a great improvement on my earlier 750 & 800 models.
  • Here in Thailand, the law is a little different ! If your Garmin develops a problem and you take it back to the retailer, they will be very unlikely to help in any way. I bought the edge 820 and had too many issues to list here. I just gave up and sold it. Losing almost $300 on the deal was worth it to be rid of the thing.

I now own a 1030 but first i got an Explore 820. I had frequent crash of the device when using battery economy mode but none when i stopped this mode. Try that perhaps.
