Edge 820 not saving rides when battery save mode has been activated.

Any ride which is long enough for battery save mode to be initiated does not get saved properly into history. The ride shows the time and duration, but it cannot be opened in the head unit. These rides also cannot be synched to the app in my mobile phone, they start synching but at about 3/4 synched (which is where it seems battery save mode initiated) it jumps back to unsynched. As the battery is getting weak this is happening on more and more rides, and especially now riding in sub zero the battery goes down quite quickly. Anyone else experience this?

  • My rides saved properly on the few occasions my 820 went into battery save mode, but that was a couple of years ago.  My battery was getting pretty weak too.  I considered replacing the battery with an aftermarket one, but instead got a small cylindrical power bank, velcroed it to my bike, and hooked it up to the 820 while riding.  That gave me tons of battery life.  Of course I only used this in dry conditions.

  • The ride with full ride time shows in history, but when I go to open it the screen starts working but just returns to the history list. Your battery bank solution is ok but not ideal for me. I bought a new battery but try as I might I cannot get ithe unit open like the youtube videos show is so easy, scared of breaking it or injuring myself. I will try to find a place to help. I think the problem is software related, but I have the latest updates. This problem quite recently cropped up. Thx for your help.

  • One thing you might try if you haven't already is a factory reset.  That would hopefully fix something that's gotten corrupted.

Yeah. The battery bank is def not ideal, but it can be a stop-gap workaround.  I eventually got an 840, which has great battery life but many of its own "undocumented features" (AKA bugs and quirks).

Heating the screen with something like a hair drier until it's pretty warm to the touch will help soften the glue. Then slowly and patiently lifting it with a plastic spudger allows the glue time to release. The subsequent surgery is also somewhat delicate.

  • Hey, thanks for the tips. I will try the reset, I guess that will also erase the history.
i had it quite warm but might try again. Cheers.
