820 edge not recognized by Windows 10 computer

Garmin Edge 820 is not recognized by any of my computers.  I used what I believe is the USB cable that it came with.  Have also tried other USB cables.  Have tried this on 3 separate computers.  No good.

I have seen some posts say it is critical to use a Garmin data cable.  Have others found this to be true?   Are others able to connect to Windows 10 computers?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

  • You need to use a USB cable that conveys data, which the Garmin cable does.  Some cables supplied with devices only provide charging current and do not transmit data.  These will not work.   It is possible for a cable to become defective, so see if you you can first prove the cable is good (proper and not defective) by using it with some the device that connects to the computer.  Try blowing out the USB port on the Edge with compressed air.  If it's not the cable or lint in the port.  Try this:  https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=PsxSBlFqTL57tN38aI6m29

    If that doesn't work, I'd try the following in this order:

    Soft reset  +10 s press on the On/Off button.

     ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Prompted non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all default FIT files and any files in the NewFiles folder. This will not delete Activities, Courses, or Workouts.

    Turn device off

    Power device on

    While booting up, press and hold upper-left corner of the touch window ONCE the copyright information appears

    Continue pressing the left hand corner of the screen until you receive the prompt

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

     Non-prompted Non-Vol Clear – (Factory Reset) Clears NV and deletes all FIT files including Activities, Courses, Workouts.

    1. Turn device off
    2. Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    3. Press and release the power button
    4. Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
    5. Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared
    6. The unit will restart and clear non-vol

     If none of that works. Call Garmin support, unless somebody else in this forums comes up with some other alternatives to try.

  • Update:  After trying to plug the Garmin into every computer in my house, I finally tried my daughter's Chromebook.  It opened the Garmin window immediately.  Strangely, I decided to plug it into my Windows 10 Desktop after that and it also opened immediately.  Same cable.  I have no explanation for this.  I am only relaying what happened.  I guess the Chromebook know the secret handshake.  Bizzare.  Now in the process of downloading updated maps!   Thanks for the suggestions in resolving this.   Any if anyone would like to venture a theory as to why the Chromebook unlocked the key to this 820, I'd love to hear it!

  • It doesn't seem likely that your 820 is new or that you've only plugged into Window recently.

    That is, did it ever work?

    It's possible chromebook managed to scrape off corrosion on the plug.
