Stationary bike showing speed & distance.

When my bike is totally stationary with my Garmin 820 attached it’s often shows a speed of 0-6kph and gains metres as it’s sat there. It also often just turns itself on while sat on the table not being touched.
How can this be on a bike that’s not moving at all?
Also when I’ve completed exactly the same ride as my wife it often shows a difference of 1 kilometre or more on her Strava App ( depending on total distance cycled) I get it wouldn’t be exactly the same but 1k or more is a big difference which one is more accurate.

Best regards. Mark

  • GPS position isn't perfect and the position it calculates will vary over time.  Position varying over time is interpreted as speed, and can accumulate distance traveled.  With an open clear view of the entire sky, the wander is much less than when  there are things obscuring or attenuating the satellite signals, as there would be inside your house.

For riding the trainer turn off GPS, or use the Trainer activity profile.

  • When you click on your Strava ride, on the right hand side you will see distance and elevation, click on one or in some cases both and correct the mileage
