Garmin not recalculating FTP of TrainingPeak workout

I have my TrainingPeaks account linked to my Garmin account.  My cycling coach creates my workouts using my FTP of 220 watts.  And I then use my Garmin 820 to control my Tacx Neo2 trainer.  Annoyingly, my Tacx reads 10 watts higher than my favero pedals which is what was used when my FTP was calculated.

I was told that if I then set my FTP in my Garmin connect to 210 watts then it will correct this.  But when I change my FTP in Garmin connect and sync I can see that the unit is indeed 210 watts, but when I open my Training Calendar and start the workout the zones are still based on the FTP of 220 watts.  I even tried setting my FTP to 100 watts in Garmin and then expected the workout zones to be corrected, but they don't change.

TrainingPeaks and my coach have said that no watts are sent over in the workout, but an FTPof 220 watts is being stored somewhere as the garmin one is not be used.

Do I need to delete the workout or are the watts calculated and stored in the FIT file that comes over from TP?

  • It all depends how you setup the power zones inside Garmin. You can set them up as a percentage of the FTP Value. This would let the Garmin automatically adjust the Power Zones as you change the FTP value in the Garmin settings.

If you set them up with fixed values, then they won't change even if you change your FTP value to ridiculously low or high levels.

  • Makes no difference.  On Garmin Connect on my android it has Power Zones and this only has an FTP option.  If I enter a value of 100 watts here it calculates my zones accordingly.  If I change the settings directly on the device via My Stats -> Training Zones -> Power Zones I can then set Power Zone Type as either watts or FTP.

Does not seem to matter as when I then push the TP workout across from Garmin Connect to my device the workout zones are still based on an FTP of 220 watts and the zones are not being calculated based on my garmin TP of 100 watts.

  • Hmm, maybe there is a issue in how the zones are configured in Trainingspeaks. I only use Garmin Trainings and there I can either set a value or just the zone, e.g. 5min in Zone 4, then 3min in Zone1. Garmin then calculates the value according to the power zones inside the device. And when I then change the FTP value, all trainings get recalculated according to the new value.

It is just a guess, but I think that the watt value is being forced to be used because Trainingspeaks set's a fix value.

  • I have exported the FIT file from TP, but I cannot confirm or deny what you are saying, but I can see that TP is setup to create the workout based on % of FTP.  I suspect it is calculating the zones upfront and you cannot do what I am trying to do.
