Edge 820 software version 12.31 Beta released 04-22-2020

Has anyone put this version on their 820 yet and if so what were the results?  Has this resolved the issues we experienced with 12.30?

  • After loading 12.31 on my device I did a 35 minute spin on the trainer.  No sensor dropouts occurred - so far so good in solving one of the issues existing with 12.30 (ie, dropouts).  Issue #2, at least the other issue I experienced with 12.30, is battery life.  It will take a bit of time to see how well the battery performs with 12.31 versus 11.20 which was the last update before 12.30 and the last version without battery issues or drop out issues.

If you're the experimental type, like me, you can find the 12.31 Beta download here:  https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=10356#Instruct

Installation instructions, found at the bottom of the page the above like leads you are pasted here for your reading pleasure:

    1. Connect your Edge 820 to your computer using the USB cable.
    2. Download and unzip Edge820_12.31Beta.zip. Place the GUPDATE.GCD file in the \GARMIN folder of your device's internal storage drive.
    3. Disconnect your device from the computer, approve the update on the Edge, and wait for the update to finish.
    4. If you would like to revert to the last public release software, follow the above steps but place the GUPDATE-1220.GCD file in the \GARMIN folder. Rename the file to GUPDATE.GCD before disconnecting your device. NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.

A note:  you may need to navigate to the system folder of your 820 to check on the current software version before you see the "install now" prompt.  Happened to me today.

  • Have installed 12.40. Seems to be 12.20 with a different version number. This should solve the connection issues but i doubt it will do anything to address the battery drain issues that 12.20 brought and 12.30 exacerbated. I had no connection issues with 12.30 but my battery life was down to 4 hours (without gps) which is pretty useless to be honest. Will try an indoor ride tomorrow and see if there is any improvement. My until is a refurbished unit from garmin a month ago so the battery itself should be fine.

  • After my second ride with 12.31, today, I am declaring it a BUST.  Two reasons:

    1. My one hour ride was filled with sensor drops for almost the full 60 minute ride.  A BIG difference between 12.30 and 12.31 is that 12.31 did reconnect quickly after dropping the sensors; unlike 12.30 which dropped everything and never reconnected.
    2. Battery consumption is horrific.  In that one hour my battery lost exactly 30% if its charge.

After today's ride I am scrapping 12.31 and will give 12.40 a shot.  If 12.40 does not resolve both the dropped sensor and battery abuse issues I'm going back to 11.20 (which had neither of those issues).
