Route planner, insufficient memory

Former Member
Former Member

Hello everybody.

I'm a user of the Garmin edge 810 ( Yes, sorry, I didnt find any place about the 810, so I ask my question into this section). I installed an SD card of 8Go to be able to download the openstreetmap map of France and Switzerland.

I plan to do a Tour de France with daily stages of about 130km. However, I have a problem when I want to enter a destination via its address. When the address exceeds 100km (approx.) the calculation percentage is blocked and says "Error calculating route, memory is insufficient."
I specify that I have reset the GPS and that the intern memory of the garmin is completely empty (103Mo free out of 105Mo)

My question is the following, am I the only one not able to put a destination beyond 100km from my current position? Is there a solution to this problem ?

If you have a solution to this problem, thank you very much in advance.

Have a good day !

  • It's not talking about the 105MB memory (or the microSD card). Both of these are "disks". It's talking about free RAM.

It should work. Keep in mind that you might need to enable "highways". For the "openfiets" maps, "highways" are cycle routes.

Where did you get your maps?

An alternative to consider is to plan your routes online (with, for example, ridewithgps). This would give you more control over what roads the route uses.

Note that the devices calculate the route to the destination from your current location.

Make sure your map is enabled.

Thank you so much for coming back! Indeed you are right, it must be due only to the RAM which does not seem to be sufficient...

Where can you activate the "highway"?

I have already tried to change the way the route is calculated between “road” and “bike touring” but the same error remains.

This is a map downloaded from the website open street map (OSM)

Indeed when I create the route on the computer and then import it on the gps, in this case the calculation is much faster and it works.

However that is constraining it obliges me to have an internet connection or, plan everything before I leave. But I don't know exactly my stages in advance and I would like to be able to put my destination in the morning of each beginning of the day and that from any place where I am located.

If you think of an additional solution, thank you very much.

  • The OSM website is https://www.openstreetmap.org You aren't downloading maps from there.

I'm guessing you mean http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/  I've used those maps frequently. That site gives you the options of downloading "openfietsmap" and "general routing" (new style or not). For the "openfietsmap", you want highways enabled.

In the 800, the "avoidances" (avoiding highways, etc) are below the type of routing ("road cycling", for example).

    =====================

If you aren't near the start of the route, you won't be able to calculate it.

What you might consider is downloading map for your location from the same source and try those. The website above lets you select a custom region (so you don't need to download a big map). Use the "Enable manual tile selection" option to do that (then you select the tiles you want the map to include).
