Edge 820 keeps adding elevation gain when I am not going uphill. How can I fix that?

I have ridden the same route both ways today and my Garmin Edge 820 shows 282 metres elevation gain goint and 231 metres elevation gain coming back! Normally less than 10 metres elevation difference, the route is flat.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution to obtain an accurate elevation gain.

  • That's not a problem I've experienced.  After uploading the ride to Garmin Connect and turning on "elevation correction", what does it show on GC?  This takes out drifting and offsets using map data.  It retains and sums the small ups and downs as recorded by the device and adds them to the larger map data ups and downs.  This is usually pretty accurate and will show how far your 820 is off.

I always do this whenever I want good elevation gain data.

  • I have just done that and it shows 7 metres elevation gain compared with 231 on the device! Seven metres is what I would expect.

  • And 10 metres for my ride in the opposite direction this morning.

  • Only thing I can suggest is checking the the baro port is clear.  It's a tiny half-moon hole on the back above the mount.  Is it possible you've gotten water in it lately?  If that's the case, leaving it in a warm place to let it evaporate might help.

If that's not the issue, I suggest contacting Garmin support and see what they say.

  • When I am not riding the bike, the gps is in a heated room. I have wiped the orifice on the back and it looks clean.
