Why does my Garmin Edge 820 keep stopping

I put the Garmin on my Christmas list and was delighted to receive one. The intention was to download a route and then follow it. I thought that it worked like a car satnav in as much as a map would appear when I switched it on. Clearly i was wrong.

Problems

1 - Took best part of 1 hour for the computer (Windows 10) to recognise the Garmin.

Once recognised I charged it to 100%.I downloaded a route as a trial.

Put it on my bike and it took about 3 miles for it to recognise a satellite then I discovered that it was too near the e bike computer. I moved it away from the computer along the handlebars. It then said it was satnav ready. I then pressed Navigation under "Train", then pressed courses

Then saved course but before I could do that the Garmin switched off. I switched on the Garmin got to saved course picked up the course the pressed Map and the Garmin switched off.

Did this at least 3 times

It is not possible to use the Garmin with Gloves on so every time this happened i had to stop cycling take my gloves off and try all the procedures.

I notice on the website that the Garmin switching off all the time is a normal problem.

Does the Cadence monitor and  the speed monitor have to be installed on the bike in order to make the  satnav work?

  • If you have not done so already, I suggest:

Download and install Garmin Express on your computer.  Plug in your 820 to the USB port on your computer and pair your 820 with Garmin Exp.  The firmware will be updated.   And if needed, maps will be updated too which can take up to an hour, so don't be in a rush.

Disconnect the 820 and it will boot up on its own.  Accept the firmware update.

Whenever you disconnect the 820 from a computer or charger, it will boot up.  If you are not using it immediately, wait for it to boot, then shut it down.   If you computer goes to sleep and cuts off power to the 820, it will boot up and discharge before you use it.

The first time a Garmin is turned on when new (or after being moved a long distance) it can take 15 or minutes for it to receive the satellite data it needs to calculate position.  Once it has downloaded the orbit information from the satellites, it will be able to located them much more quickly in the future.

The 820 will work with gloves, but it can be cumbersome with bulky gloves.  There is a sensitivity setting you can access by swiping down from the home screen.  Set it to maximum to use with gloves.

No sensors are needed for sat nav to work.

    Thank you for your advice.

Before i respond to you email i would advise that my son spent a long time trying to configure the device  and discovered that if we disable the WIFI and the automatic updates then the Garmin stays switched on.

So i will not switch on the WIFI facility or the automatic updates.

I tried your suggestion above and after 2 hours or so it says that the update failed and i would need another 3 hours to up date the maps, I don't know if the firmware updated. i just asked for both to be updated. I have disconnecte the Garmin from the PC (Windows 10) and it seems to be working.

Is there a way of setting up a "home " location so that If I get lost or want to curtail a roue then I look up home and set up a new route for home?

I have printed the 24 pages of the manual and can't find it.

    Many thanks.

Because you haven't given yourself a forum name, the system defaults to a number. If you want to change it...
