Edge 820 and eTAP not staying connected since FW 11.20

My Edge 820 recently got the software update to 11.20 and since then my eTAP is showing eTAP connected and beeping about every 20 seconds. I finally disabled my eTAP on my 820 as I could not stand the beeping any longer.

It looks like this has been a previous problem and was resolved. Was it resolved through a software update? I have removed and reinstalled the connection to my eTAP and it did not change anything.

Please help.

I had the same problem after the ver. 11.20 update. I called Garmin customer support and was told this hadn't been reported before. I pointed out the above post. The customer service rep suggested calling SRAM because Etap was the only ANT+ sensor dropping out. Before I called SRAM I recharged both the front and rear derailleur batteries. Rechecked the 820 and now Etap isn't dropping out. The FD battery was still in the green. The RD battery was in the red. I'm sure I've run the RD battery well into the red before and not had this issue with the Edge 820.

As a starting point I'd suggest charging up the Etap derailleur batteries and seeing if the problem persists. I'll see how the 820 functions over the next few days. It doesn't seem right that the Etap shifters and derailleurs function fine yet the 820 apparently isn't picking up their ANT+ signal.

  • On my EDGE 1030, since two month, i coudn't connect my etap anymore!

  • Thanks for the answer. I didn't get notified of a response. I have charged both FD and RD batteries and problem remains. This issue did not occur prior to  update to 11.20 so I am amused that Garmin is trying to pass on the issue to SRAM. I will try changing the battery in the blip box and see if that helps anything.

  • It is possible it's SRAM's issue.  Garmin could have made a change to their software that is still compliant with SRAM's spec, but SRAM isn't perfectly adherent to their own spec and that's causing the problem after Garmin's change.  This type of issue with sports tech does crop up on occasion.

That said, I'd still give greater probability to the issue being on Garmin's side.

I ride every day and my eTap began to dropout and reconnect 4 days ago on my Edge 520+. My battery charge indicator (on the Garmin, paddles and deraileurs) shows the batteries are fine. I reset the Garmin and that made no difference. One of the fields on the Garmin shows which gear the chain is on. That indicator is OFF more than it is ON.

    Any help?

Has any resolution been found to this problem, either on the Garmin or SRAM side? Appreciate any help.

  • Well not that I am very happy with the edge 820 (and strava/couses associated bugs), i have no issue with etap (11 speed and 2 front). recognized fast and displaying adequatly gear during ride. riding with 11.20. If it was a soft issue i guess i would have the same trouble. I would thus balance more on SRAM side, unless hardware issues with 820??

  • Hi, I had the same problem when i tried to use Galineo GPS instead of Glonass. I went back to Glonass and the issue disappeared. Do you use Galileo GPS ?
