Elevation error after auto pause

On my Edge 820, the total climb is always wrong. In looking at the topographic plot, it is clear that every time the device pauses, there is a drastic drop in the elevation. Then once I start riding, the elevation corrects, and it gives me the difference as a climb. It does seem that the magnitude of the drop correlates with the duration of the break. When I say break, I mean at most a 30 minute meal break, not anything overnight.

Here is a good example. Look at miles 20, 25, 35 and 50:

It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but looking back at old rides, it is clear that this has been happening forever. In trying to trouble shoot this, I update the Edge to the latest software, and I complete a full factory reset. This issue persists even after a factory reset with the default settings.

Any ideas what's going on here? More importantly, any way to fix it??
