GPS Accuracy data field has only 2 values, --- and 3 meters

Hi,

i found this bug(???) in 820, with any GPS settings (GPS only, +Glonass, + Galileo) i have only 2 values in this field, --- (empty, when still there is no reception) and 3m immediately when the position is locked (very soon, even indoor). It is 100% wrong, because i switch it on indoor, far from every window, in the bathroom also :) , unable to reach such an accuracy, i put my Edge 1000 next to it, when it locks the satellites (same time as Edge 820 locks),, the accuracy field has a very high number (even 100+ meters), and slowly decreasing to 10-50m (indoor) but never reach the 3m. (3m only outdoor with clear sky vision and it takes 10-15secs for sure with Edge1000). So something wrong with (computing of) this data field.

  • I got the 1030 a week ago and agree that the gps accuracy field is bogus. Outside shows 9 feet, inside my house in my closet shows 9 feet. Makes you wonder about the accuracy of the other fields.

  • I think they (Garmin) reduced this field capacity to that 2 values (--- if no signal and 3meter/9ft if have any gps lock even if it very bad and inaccurate) in every newer models (520plus, 820, 530, 830, 1030 ) avoiding the complains about bad GPS receptions...  (as they removed the satellite view display page also from this units)

  • But the satellite view screen is available on the Edge 820:

Unless you're talking about something else...

  • how do You get it on 820 ? pls write down the steps for me , i dont find it...

  • I found this by accident, it is not described in the user manual.

    1. Enter GPS mode:

    2. Then press the lap button     for 2-3 seconds

  • ahh yes, then they only hide it (and not removed, in the previous models it was not hidden) and need trick :) great finding!

now i could validate that it is really using the Galileo sats if the GPS+Galileo setting is ON .

But the GPS accuracy field (which is reported by the GPS chip contiously)  is showing --- or 3meter, there is no other value...

  • Thanks for the tip. I tried this on the 1030, did not work. So Garmin's way of fixing a problem, gps accuracy, is to lie about it. I have deleted the gps accuracy field since it is useless.

  • Interesting.  I used to see this screen on my 705 but haven't seen it since then until you pointed out this trick on the 820.  It's nice, but is there any practical value to it?

One thing of note.  If I change between satellite systems, e.g. GPS to GPS+GLONASS, I had to exit all the way out and then back into the GPS screen to get the satellite screen to display.

  • Never knew you could see the satellites in use screen on the 820. It was easier to get to on the 510.

Attached a comparison of GPS reception between my 510 and my 820. Both set to GPS+Glonass
