Changing Maps on Edge 820

I am planning a cycling trip to Spain. I checked the Garmin site for compatible maps for the Edge 820 and I purchased the Spain map that was listed. When I tried to download/install it on my Edge 820, I got an error message that there was not enough storage for the 4 Gb install (Windows Explorer showed 8 Gb available). I can't find any documentation or instructions on how to get the Spain map on my 820 and how to access it.
  • What people should do is use one of the numerous sources of free OSM maps.

Many of these will let you download a map for the region you actually need.

The 820 has 16 GB. The North American maps use about 7 GB.

Maps just for Spain should be less than 4GB.

    (Spain is great.)

What exactly was the error message? Was it referring to storage on your Edge or your PC?

I went over to Mallorca twice last year and used my 820, I didn't have to do anything with the maps, it worked fine as it was.

  • ???

The "North American" region units don't come with detailed maps for Europe.
  • The Edge 820 only needs maps if you intend to have it create courses, or provide turn/by/turn instructions on downloaded courses. You can still navigate downloaded courses without maps, and those with embedded turn instructions will provide those turn instruction. Of course, if you plan to look at maps on the device, then you'll need maps. (IDK about Strava segments w/o maps installed etc..) Displaying speed, distance, etc, and recording your track and all your data will still occur whether or not you have maps installed. But yes, download OSM maps for free. Here's a page that describes how to do that:

Apologies, my crystal ball didn't tell me where the OP was located in the world.
  • He wrote about buying maps for Spain

You don't need a crystal ball to suspect he didn't have European maps (that, wherever in the world he was located, it likely wasn't in Europe).
