Hello guys, I updated my edge 820 after months and now it doesn't find the satellites, I´ve been surfing the forum and I found a similar problem on an edge 520 and followed the steps of changing the file at the RemoteSW folder but didn't work. Can anyone guide me, please? Thanks!
jrodriguezc - What GPS software version is listed on your Edge 820 (Menu Icon>Settings>System>About>Copyright Info)? If the version is anything other than 2.30, I would recommend plugging the Edge into the computer and updating it using Garmin Express. After doing this, change the activity profile to one that uses GPS and allow the Edge to acquire a GPS signal. This process could take up to 5-7 minutes.
Hello Matthew, I checked the information and it is as following: Software Version: 11.00 (966ec301dc6b18) Unit ID 3932298302 GPS Version 2.30 TSC Version 85.22.00 WLAN Version 2.40
I left the device in an open field on Train mode but it was unable to locate the satellites.
Yes. Put it outside in Ride mode, not Trainer mode. On a trainer, you don't need GPS, so it's likely turned off.
No, that's not true. Of the 3 modes on my 820, "Ride" and "Train" both use the GPS, the only one that doesn't is "Indoor". So, assuming the default settings have not been changed, "Train" mode will (should) use the GPS.
SOLVED: I had the same problem since a few updates ago. I noticed that somewhere during the winter 2018/19 my GPS quit working was not able to get a fix. The Edge stayed on "Acquiring satellites state" for ever (either GP or GPS+GLONASS on, open air, training mode). My software was up to date (11.0), but almost since the initial installation I was always using the auto update through WiFi. I was about to throw the Edge 820 away when I remember to try to use a cable + Garmin Express. I removed the unit on Garmin Express, installed it again, and the GPS come again back to life. Great. 400 Euros partially recovered.
Anyway, I got this unit 2 years ago and the number of issues it had is unbearable. I had before a Edge 800 that worked flawless for 4 years, until the internal GPS antenna broke after a fall (my fault) during a travel abroad on 2016. I replaced it on an emergency by a lower spec Edge Touring Plus (bought quite cheap), which was also great and worked flawless for the rest of the trip, but had a few less features than my 800. Upon returning home, I was able to repair myself the broken GPS antenna, but since the battery was slightly old, I decided to sell both (the 800 and the Touring Plus) and buy the "fancy new" 820. It was the worst decision of my bike life. It was not possible to upgrade the Edge 800/810/Touring software without re-writing all the code and creating this buggy device? My life following routes was never the same as before. And the multiple crashes are incredible (I do not recall to have one crash with the 800). I feel so bad about it that I am always looking for old Edge 800/810/Touring to buy on second hand. Unhappily, I did not found any yet near my home address and I do not risk to buy one without seeing the actual device. I believe that if Garmin would put those again on their production line, they would be a huge success again, at least to all of us (like me) that experienced this painful never-ending transition to the 820...
