820 connection issues

Hi all,

I have recently got a Garmin Edge 820 Touring, and I hate to say it but I am seriously disappointed so far with it. I have read a lot about people not being able to connect these to their phones and unless we have bought the wrong product, I can't work out how this is supposed to connect to my phone via Bluetooth (or connect to anything else for that matter!).

I have read that there are a lot of issues since a software update was carried out which stopped connections with phones and I am wondering if I may be affected by this. The unit is running software version 4.20.

I feel like I am falling at the first hurdle to be honest, and so far I feel its cost a lot of money and is currently working as a glorified paperweight! I have really got into my cycling the last couple of years (Ride London and a few other events) and have waited a long time to be able to afford a nice bike computer/GPS.

Can anybody give me some pointers please?!
  • Just follow the instructions - it all works fine.
By the way - this is the edge 820 Forum not the edge 820 touring.

  • There have been issues with BT phone connections with various older versions of firmware. AFAIK, The current version, (10.0 in the US), is working well in this regard. I suggest deleting/removing any pairing between the Edge and your phone, downloading and installing Garmin Express on you computer and using it update the firmware on your Edge via a suitable USB cable, like the one supplied with the Edge. To be safe, I'd delete and reinstall the GC app on your phone. Then following the app instructions on pairing your Edge.

Excuse the ignorance but what's the difference?

No need. Just done some checks and worked it out. Looks like I was given the wrong unit. Looks like I will take it back...
