Upgraded from 510 --> 820, two issues/thoughts

Hey,

I have used a 510 for 4+ years, just upgraded to a new 820 with software 10.25. I love it except for two little issues/thoughts:

1) From the top notification scroll down, under sensors it has "calibrate..." when my power sensor is connected. Is there anyway to remove this? My power sensor pretty much calibrates itself so I don't need this. If I want to, I can always go in to the power meter setting and do it from there.

2) On the 510 the Heart Rate sensor was paired to the "unit" and the other sensors were paired to a "bike". As I have two bikes, one with a power meter and one without, I just switched bikes on my 510 and all would be all good when I select the bike without it as it wouldn't continue to search for the power meter as it wasn't programmed with one. With the 820 I have to set up my power meter to the "unit" so when I switch between the two bikes, I have to disable/enable the power meter each time so it doesn't try and search for it constantly when I'm on the non power bike.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these two matters please? I'm not missing anything am I!?

Cheers

Daniel

  • I saw your post a few days ago and thought perhaps someone with more specific knowledge than me might respond. Since no one has, I'll weigh in with my meager understanding. 1) There is no way that I'm aware of to get rid of the calibrate button on the Connections screen. 2) At some point in the evolution of Edge devices, Garmin decided to not link sensors to bike profiles but instead to lump them together and use whichever are active. If it receives two or more of the same type of sensor at startup, it asks which to use. It is my understanding that the Edge doesn't search, per se, but simply continually receives all ANT+ signals within range and displays those it recognizes from having been paired. There have been issues described in this forum with some versions of the firmware where the 820 reports a sensor that has been selected is lost and then found again periodically during a ride. I've had that issue with some past versions but have not seen it recently.
  • Thanks for the reply. Interesting to read,so you don't think the battery would drain too much when I ride my 2nd bike (without power) if I left the power sensor enabled all the time?
  • I don't think it will make any difference to battery life. The receiver is still active and receiving no matter what sensors are present. The micro looks at the received signal and uses/records what it recognizes. It'll see signals from your active sensors and signals from sensor on adjacent riders/bikes, recognizing and utilizing only those that are paired.
