Version 10 update broke auto upload

I have an Android with the latest connect version 4.11, my 820 is updated to version 10.00. it appears the new 820 update requires connect version 4.5 ( I'm assuming 4.5 is only on iOS). My device updated and I noticed that I can no longer upload my fit files though my phone. I tried re pairing the device 3 times, with both devices restarted at try 2. The 820 still connects to my phone, and displays that it is syncing but the sync never formally completes it's download, and I never see the ride post on connect; I do receive a ride upload confirmation on my device. I have tried both syncing from the phone and the device as well. I believe I have eliminated any user error from my testing.

Also side note to the devs, like the new text response, but could you throw in an I love you response, it would help.
  • i have the exact same issue. 820 device just updated to v10 and prompted me to repair so i did and thats fine but it won't sync manually even let alone automatically.
on android the compatible version of GC depends on your device. i have a samsung s8 and the latest is 4.11 same as you. seems ridiculous that garmin have effectively desupported a phone which has been on the market for 18 months max.

Garmin, please get your act together!

I don't think this is a case of not supporting your phone. Someone just pushed code in the latest edge 820 package that caused Bluetooth sync issues on Android devices. This is a service team fault, I'm just surprised they haven't acknowledged it yet or pushed a fix. It seems like the 820 update is what broken this.

  • Same problem here with a Samsung S7.
Automatic upload won't work anymore (one of my favorite features, as I track my commute rides).
Manual is OK, despite an error message on the GPS unit.
  • Here sort of the same issues: when it connects, it's no problem. But the connection is dropped quite fast during a ride. This results in no text messages and live segments etc. This is the issue since the upgrade to version 10. My phone is a Galaxy S9+
  • I will get these issue reported for investigation.
  • Think I'll hold off updating until this is resolved, unless it is confirmed as a Samsung only issue. I'm on 8.80 with a Nokia and everything is fine.
  • Galaxy S8 here and it's been working OK. I had some issues uploading activities via BT awhile back and what resolved it was forgetting/deleting the BT connections on the 820 and phone. There should be two on the phone. Uninstalled Connect on the phone. Rebooted my phone and installed Connect again. Rebooted the Edge and went through the pairing process from scratch. When done, I have two Edge BT devices on the phone that differ in the icon that precedes Edge 820. One looks like a tablet and phone and the other like a desktop. I suspect these are BTLE and normal BT connections.

In a moment of impulsiveness I bit the bullet and upgraded to 10.0 and, guess what? Everything is fine so far after an indoor ride on a smart trainer.

This same thing happened to me on my iPhone 7. So the issue is not confined to Android users.

Here is my story. I plugged my device into my computer because I was using cell phone adaptors to recharge my lights. When I checked on how far along my charge was I saw that an update was ready for me. I hadn't ever updated my Edge 820 since I purchased back in June. At least not knowingly. I can't remember, but I must have hit something to start download.

So I went on a ride yesterday and everything appeared as normal. Got a heart rate and it worked on my 47.6 mile bike ride.

However, when I got home I could not get the ride to upload. Then I noticed that my phone was unpaired. I could not get it to pair and I was about to destroy the device and my phone.

Every time I tried to upload yesterday's ride I got an error message saying "upload failed". After 3 times of "upload failed", I lost the ride file. It just doesn't exist.

So today I decided to try again after calming down overnight. I cracked out my manual that I had to print out since Garmin is to cheap to supply one. And even that manual had bad data on how to set the device up for pairing. The field is now known as 'phone" not whatever the manual said.

I also got the message that I needed version 4.5 of Garmin Connect. Now this may not be Garmin's fault, but I had no way of knowing which version I have. If someone can tell me, it would be helpful. I assume things auto update there, but who knows.

I almost thought that I was going to have to delete Garmin Connect and upload it as if I never had it. Of course if I did that I would assume that I would lose all of my data from my first ride I recorded with it.

I think I have it synched up correctly now. But only time will tell when I take my next ride.

By the way, yesterday's epic ride that started in 35 degree weather? It's completely gone.
  • Uploaded activities wind up on Garmin servers and can viewed on the Garmin Connect website or on the phone app. Uninstalling and reinstalling the phone app will not delete uploaded activities, which can be viewed again once the app is reinstalled and you sign in.

Usually, activities stay stored on the Edge until deleted by the user, whether or not they are uploaded, so if you do delete an activity in Garmin Connect, you can upload it again from the Edge.

You can also save copies of the activities on your computer and/or upload them to other websites, like Strava, for example.

You said your activity disappeared off the device. You might check and see if the fit file for it is still on the device in which case you can copy it to your computer. If it's corrupted, it may be possible to fix it by posting it in this forum.

This is how it worked for me anyway.
