Empty cue sheet

I loaded a TCX course file (created at ridewithgps.com) onto my 820 (firmware v9.10) but when I loaded it, and after waiting for it to finish 'calculating', the cue sheet was empty - it showed the start of the ride and the end of the ride, nothing else. The course showed correctly on the map and the navigation prompts appeared but the cue sheet was empty. I loaded the same course onto my 520 and the cue sheet contents appeared correctly.

It's not a big deal as I don't tend to use the cue sheet but there seems to be a problem here. Anyone else had this?

David
  • Not sure what your problem is. Some units let you turn off the course points (but that doesn't seem to be your problem).

The cuesheet (course points) are not related to the calculation stuff.
Here's more info about what the device does:

    * It doesn't matter whether you use TCX or GPX files. They both contain the same information and will work exactly the same. (FIT files will work the same too.)

    * TCX files can contain extra information called "course points" (Garmin's term) that provide "primitive" turn instructions. These are intended for units, like the 500/510, that don't have maps (that doesn't mean they aren't useful on units that have maps).

    * It doesn't matter what route planner you use. They all do the same thing. There is no magic in the route planner.

    * The Garmins that have maps provide two methods of navigation. These work independently from each other (you can use one or the other or both).

-1 One is more basic. For lack of a standard term. I call this "track following". Course points are part of this mode. All the Garmins support this method.

-2.The other is "turn guidance" (Garmin's turn). This is the "big white arrows". For this mode, the unit itself calculates a second "path" to follow by walking the track and picking the roads the track appears to be following. This process uses the map installed on the device. (This process does not use the course points that might be in the file.)

    Thanks for the reply.

The 820 does let you turn off the course points - I tried that setting but when you turn off the course points the cuesheet screen disappears completely (which makes sense). I have the course points turned on. Just to be clear, this is what appears on the course points screen:

    Start of route
    0ft

    End of route
    61mi

    End
    61mi

I tried loading some other courses that were already in the 820 from a while ago and the same thing happened - no course points. I also tried exporting the course from ridewithgps.com as a fit file instead of a tcx file but it made no difference.

Seems to be some sort of bug?

Like I said, not a big deal but something that needs fixing if it's a problem.

  • The Garmin convert the tcx file to fit.

The tcx file is a text file. I would look at it to verify that the course points are in it.

    It could be a bug.

You could PM the link to the RWGPS page.

I don't think it's a problem with the tcx file. I've had a look at it and all the course points are there. If I load the same file onto my 520 all the course points appear.
  • Could you post the tcx file and the FIT file that the 820 produced?

What do see on the 820 if you take the FIT file from 520 and load it on the 820?

    Just to be clear...

You want the tcx file exported from ridewithgps.com and the fit file that the 820 created in its courses folder - is that correct?

To load the fit file from the 520 onto the 820, do I take the file from the 520's courses folder and put it in the courses folder on the 820, or do I put it in the newfiles folder and leave the 820 to work out what to do with it?
  • Yes, if you could post the tcx file from RWGPS and the FIT file from the 820 course folder that would allow me to see what might be going on.

To put the 520 course file on the 820 place it in the 820 NewFiles folder.

    Hi Alan

I've sent you the tcx and fit files.

I put the fit file from the 520 onto the 820 but the same problem still exists - no course points showing on the cue sheet. This course, on the 520, shows all the course points.

  • I think the problem is with the 820. The TCX and FIT files look OK, but I need to dig deeper because when I load on my 820 I only get the start and end point. On the 520 it looks OK.

I have raised a support ticket with Garmin.

    Edge 820

    Edge 520

  • After some more digging I found that this is actually by design and was added in build 9.10.
    • Fixed issue where a turn prompt and a course point prompt for the same turn would pop up at the same time while riding a course.
The way it was fixed was to filter out any turn course points if TBT is on.

If you have TBT OFF then all the course points get reported. If you have TBT ON then only the none turn course points get reported. E.g. Water, Food etc.
