Speed Sensor vs GPS Average Speed

Question for y’all. I am seeing lower average speeds on post ride data than others on the same Strava rides. Does anyone have experience with the difference between GPS average speed versus speed sensor average speed? Is one faster or slower than the other?
thanks
  • It's my understanding that average speed (post ride data) is calculated simply by dividing distance by time regardless of what you used during the ride. The speed displayed during the ride is the only info coming from the speed sensor.. is your gps total mileage for the ride similar to theirs? As usual I could be wrong
  • It is my understanding that, over tortuous tracks, GPS distances are often shorter than wheel sensor distances due the granularity of GPS data. And, instantaneous GPS speeds vary more the wheel sensor speeds due to GPS position noise. The 820, GC, and third-party apps have both the GPS and wheel sensor data. How which uses what is the question.
