Navigate round Strava course starting in the middle

I tried to export a friends ride and follow it. It's a nice circle and he lives a bit from me, so I just wanted the 820 to start following it from where I enter the circle, so to speak - ie not starting where he did.
However, I couldn't find a way to do that.. either the 820 tried to guide me to his home to start there, or it tried to recalculate the route which took ages and didn't work anyway. I never got it to find the route despite spending 30km on it... dismissing all the "Recalculate route?" messages except one, which also took ages (10-15 minutes!) but didn't work.

What am I doing wrong? Does navigating a route require me to start at the exact starting point or is there a setting I missed?
  • Please post a link to the course and your activity. Having started the Course you should have got 'Course detected' message at any point where you joined it.
  • Calgot,
It is best if you disable recalculate or the 820 will try to direct you to the end from where you are now.
Your best option is to Navigate to the course (the point where you want to join it) and start the course when you are nearby. The Garmin will not navigate you to the course as it has no idea where, on a circular course, you wish to join it.

OK, thanks. I'll disable recalculation next time. It kept telling me to do a U-turn although I was going in the correct direction, so I guess it maybe found the route but still wanted me to start from the beginning.
