Navigating to the start of a course - automatic ending course when crossing finish

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I went for a ride and had the following slightly annoying problem. I put a course onto my edge 820 from which the start was about 10 kilometres from my home. When I started the course in front of my home, the edge asked me to 'navigate to the start of the course'. I pushed yes en started the tracking of my trip. Getting closer to the start I ended up at the (virtuel end of the) route of the course ("route found") and, as I crossed the virtual end of the course, my Edge automatically ended the course (displaying something like 'training completed').

The start of my course was a few metres further. I had to restart the course and by consequence didn't get the tracking of my first k's together in one ride and had to merge both rides afterwards.

Is there a way to avoid the automatic ending when riding a course?

In fact, I think the edge should have kept to it's first job and just navigate me to the start and navigating the course further then. The automatic ending would also have been a problem at the end of the course, which I avoided by not crossing the finish line.

Thanks for your answers.

Kind regards,

Michaël (Belgium)
  • Yes. I've found that if I pass too close the end of a course at the start or on the outbound leg, It will assume I've completed the course. What I've taken to doing for a course that returns to or near the start is ending the course some distance before the actual end of the intended ride so that it doesn't assume I've completed the course when I'm starting out.

Another option I use for an out and back or lollipop course it to create two separate courses, and outbound course and a return course.

Thank Looigi. Do you mean you adjust the course on your PC before actually riding it?

Other question: is it possible to start a course during your ride? E.g. when you know how to get to the start but you want to track your way to the start too (in one activity).
  • Yes. When I lay out the course on my PC, I end it before the actual end so that the course end is not close to the start.

Recording a ride and navigation are independent. The 820 starts recording your ride when you press the Start button and pauses recording when you press it again. You can be navigating a course when you press Start or you can start navigating a course after you press Start while riding.
  • As, looigi said, recording is separate from navigating (using a course).

You can stop and start a course in the middle of a recorded ride (maybe, you want to use one course for half of a ride and another course for the rest of the ride).
