Edge 820: sensitivity of the touch screen, for instance to enter a location?

I have my Edge 820 now for about 9 months and the touch screen drives me nuts. I wonder whether there is any adult person, with normal sized fingers, who's able to enter an address in the ABCDE keyboard layout? It is possible for me only if I use a stylus with a tip thin enough to touch the right character. Also often when I want to switch an activity and I need to touch one of the tiny triangles I often accidentally select the highlighted activity so I have to click the middle of the screen and then the home icon for another try to switch activity.
I have always updated to the latest software versions (I'm now at 8.70) but it's my impression that all what is changed is support for exotic other devices like lighting, electronic gear, power meters etc. What is your experience? Is my device worse than other and should I get back to Garmin? Or is this behaviour I describe considered normal?
(I have already tried all three types of sensitivities)
  • My original Edge 820 had an appalling touch screen. I contacted Garmin support and they sent me a file of touch screen software that improved it massively.
The Edge 820 doesn't work like an Iphone but its works pretty well most of the time. It seems that some 820s didn't get the latest Touchscreen software. The Touch screen software is independent of the software release it seems.

Anyway Garmin support were very helpful.

  • Is this something you are able to share. I contacted Garmin support, and mentioned the screen software and they just told me to update to the latest software (which I have), reset the device (which I have), then raise a ticket to send it back in to them (which I don't really want to do)
  • Go into settings ->System->About->Copyright info

    mine shows TSC 85.22.

Initially mine was at some other standard. Check if yours is at this level.

  • Ah it seems to be the same, Cheers
  • I guess if it’s really that bad I’d send it back. I do find mine is less sensitive in the cold 0 to 4 deg C. When it’s hot it can be over sensitive ( sweat might trigger the screen). These are minor problems for me and manageable by changing the sensitivity.
