Garmin Edge 820 Freeze - battery save mode + navigation

Hi,

my garmin edge 820 (software 8.5) freezes everytime i've got navigation running and in battery save mode. I have hold down the power button and do a hard-reset. Has anyone else had this problem? I am going to try turning off GLONAS nav mode to see if this helps - as i've read this can affect battery life. with the settings active mentioned earlier, i struggle to get 4 hours battery life - not good enough even for a weekend training ride.
  • I had the same issue. I updated this morning to the latest version 8.70 just before I left for a ride. During the ride it turned out that the battery save mode was enabled and I als had navigation enabled . I had three issues with the new update:
    1. It automatically enabled battery save mode (which I don't like)
    2. It sends messages about the battery status which you can only get away if you toch the screen which is annoying if you are wearing gloves
    3. Two times the screen froze and I had to reset the device

Me too. Device froze twice on one ride today. Same conditions as above. Nav + Battery save. Very annoying. Seems to be induced by a turn notification cos both times it froze with nav instruction on the screen with the 'tap to clear' label.
  • Well here we go again. Garmin always use the customers as beta testers. At least this has not changed...

Happened to me too. Haven't used navigation since.
  • I've not had a problem. I'd call Garmin support.

  • well at least i'm not alone with this issue - i might call garmin support and quote this thread - perhaps they are aware of the issue, and plan a fix (yeah... right)

I've had this problem for months. It usually freezes 2 or 3 times a ride (average 45 miles). I must admit I haven't contact Garmin as I heard their support is crap. I've experienced freezing with both the full turn-by-turn navigation and with battery saving on and off. I've just tried deleting my old activities to see if the freezing is caused by a disk space problem. Waiting for my next ride to see if it has had any affect.
  • A big thanks to all you beta testers! I'll stick to my trustworthy Edge 800. Batterylife is still 8hr+ even in the cold and after almost 6 years(!) of use.
