Would you still buy an edge 820?

Hi there,
I apologize if the question may sound stupid...But, given the experience you had with your edge 820 so far, would you recommend it?
I am contemplating buying a capable bike computer/GPS and was looking at the 520 and the 820. I think the 520 would do basically everything I need but I also like the idea of having decent navigation options. Problem is I've read some really not enthusiastic reviews on-line and here also it seems the 820 had some serious issue with touch screen and screen halo.

I have a Garmin Fenix 5 which I returned for GPS issues and I am waiting for Garmin response on whether it will be replaced or not, and I really hate the idea of buying an Edge 820 and after the first ride come back on Garmin forum and complain about how it performs.

So, are you guys happy with your 820? would you be more happy with something else? like a 520 ? I am not considering the 1000/1030 for price/size and because it would be definitely overkill for the use I would do..
Thanks a lot!
Cheers,

  • I think it?s great. Use it for navigation and recording ride, HR, cadence, power, speed, altitude & position.

You have to get used to it and the unique way Garmin?s work. I think a lot of complaints are due to user?s expectations and their inability to operate it correctly.

The touch screen is ok but do not expect it to operate like your smartphone.

Overall I?m very happy with mine and would buy another. Garmin support are also very helpful if you do have a problem.

I use mine a lot. I ride about 7000 miles a year with it. I don?t work for Garmin.

I?m very happy with my 820
  • No. I would try an Element next.
  • Has been good so far apart from the GPS tracks - often has me riding on the rooftops and cutting corners (glonass off, 1 sec, fw8.4).

Would never have paid full price but at GBP250 it was just about OK
  • I think your gonna have little issues with all of the device I was riding with a buddy a few weeks back descending down a mountain pass at around 45MPH at least that's what my Garmin was telling me my buddy was right behind me descending at 23 MPH (Wahoo Element) anyway back to your question.

I have both the 520 and the 820 my Edge 520 has been a real good device and would not hesitate to buy another one. I was one of the first to buy the Edge 820 and the screen sensitivity was horrible, returned the device and went back to the Edge 520. I repurchased the Edge 820 about a month ago and since then I have not used my 520, for me the 820 has improved since its launch, I think a lot of the halo issues are devices that were manufactured early on. My biggest issue with the Edge 820 is while riding swiping through the data pages its sometimes difficult when your finger is bouncing around but I finally bought the remote and its made it a ton better. I like that I can configure the top button on the remote to switch to my map screen and then one more press and I am back to my main page.

So yes I would buy either again!
  • I would definitely buy another if I lost mine. I had an 800 before, and would have said the same about that.
  • Definitely I will, the 820 is (now) a great machine and even better then 800/810, it takes a lot off time before it was OK but today it is.
There is not an other brand better or good looking.
    That's what I has to say :)
  • I bought my Edge 820 in July 2017 and have about a thousand miles on it now. It came with firmware v. 8.00 and I have since installed v. 8.40. I have had no problems with it and would buy it again since I upgraded from an Edge 500 that still works well. I have been using both Edges since getting the 820. I use the 500 to keep the total miles on my road bike. You cannot set the total odometer on the 820 without using a third-party program and editing one of the files. I'm just not that dedicated to sleuth the 820's odometer to set the bike's actual total miles. I wish someone would build an IQ app with an editable odometer data field. Back to your question. I would discount all the early reviews from user comments and YouTube videos, and only consider such from the last few months. Garmin has fixed the early bugs that you'll read about or see in videos. Finally, it depends on whether or not you are buying your first smart bike computer or upgrading, and how much money you have at your disposal. It it's your first, I'd say definitely buy the 820. If you are upgrading from an Edge 520 and your budget is a little tight, you might not get the incremental value you want for dollars spent. $300 or so to upgrade from a 520 to an 820 can go instead for some nice road shoes and other kit. There's no such thing as a perfect bike computer. And it seems that when a new one is released, it takes a while before the bugs are fixed. The 820 has been out a year now and new ones seem to be solid performers. I expect the 820 to stay in its position in the Garmin Edge lineup for maybe two more years before it is outdated. Then you might see a new cycle of bug fixes on its replacement model. I also purchased and use a Garmin Remote with my Edge 820. I easily start and stop rides, laps, and data screens using the remote, all without removing my hands from the shifters and brakes. This reduces or eliminates smudging the computer screen with sweaty or grimy fingers so it stays clean and easier to read. I posted a short 3-4 minute video on YouTube showing where I mounted the remote and how the 820 responds to it. Be sure to read the comments with the video because I changed the routing of the bands from what you'll see described in the video. DD
  • Thank you all for your replies, it really made it easier for me to decide to order one !
