820 or 1000

Hello ,
am unable to make a decision to buy the newer 820 or the older 1000 , if i bought the garmin 1000 then a new device came out that would be a loss .. but again how important is a big screen and how difficult to follow the 820 map because of the map size

thanks in advance
  • I find the 820 fine for following routes. I've never used the 1000.

  • I like the compact size of the 820, I prefer it above the 1000. I have no problems with the screen size. Try to compare them.
  • To navigation better is older 1000 because is faster one.
I use 820 and feel like beta tester.
I prepare routes at home on PC because for 820 takes to long time and sometimes leading strange routes (with proper settings on device)
After 4 months rides with 820 I saw on screen halo.
Touchscreen has got strange sense of humour, once is better, once is worse.
Newer one (820) does not mean better (1000).

  • I think what you really want is stay away from a Garmin device. Do yourself a favor, get a Wahoo Elmnt Bolt, you'll get a device that actually works as promised...
  • With a map with no street names, no topography, and no context.... In other words, it doesn't have the same capabilities as an 820 or 1000, so make sure it'll work for you before you go that route. The screen is supposed to be really beautiful, but it's not an interchangeable replacement for an 820 or 1000.

I'm sorry, how are the street names and topography relevant for navigation? You approach the junction, what you need is to be told which turn to take, most of the time you can't see the street signs anyway. And this is where Garmin navigation fails, you deviate from the course, the device then recalculates and for the rest of the ride you get no more prompts. So you end up looking at the map screen before every junction anyway, 'cos you can't trust the device with the prompts. So how's that better in terms of navigating capabilities? I say Wahoo is absolutely on par with 820, only better.

How about the screen issues ? I heared horror stories about the screen of the 820 .. but seems like the updates are fixing them which seems to be great .. i am sorry u had problem with ur screen Nick / cayo
  • It works better after the updates. Unfortunately that's not the same thing as saying "it works". Because it doesn't, it's still a far cry from 810, which worked all the time, every time.

I posted a review on Amazon of the 820 and compared it to my experiences with the Bolt and the Edge Explore 1000. My two cents: if you care about navigation, stay away from the 820. The Explore 1000 is much better, as is the Bolt. Which of those two to get is a matter of personal preference in terms of what you like to have and see when you ride -- but both function well.

    Thanks for your reply .

i read your thorough review .. very nice of you to take the time to give an extensive review like this one ..

i really want to buy garmin 1000 .,. however everytime i remmber that the device been made 3 years ago and a replacement might be annouced any time soon i shy off .. in the second hand .. i live in canada and our summer is short .. if i didnt enjoy it now i wont be able to use it in three months or so ..
