Shortcuts, tips, etc.

Hey there, good 820 users; wondering if anyone has a pointer to a list of shortcuts or tips for using the 820. What I'm looking for mostly is a way to quickly get back to the 'top' when I'm say 5 levels deep in the menus? Getting back the ride in progress data screens would be super handy. I've found if I stop and start the activity it puts me back there, but would rather some other method. Was super slow making tweaks to my settings while out on a ride today.

Also, is there any hint that the hard buttons might be reprogrammable at some point? I would love to turn the lap button into a 'page' button to cycle through the data pages for the activity I'm in. Pretty frustrating having to remove hand from bars, swipe, look down to see if it worked, swipe again, etc. Would love it if they had an 820 version with more hard buttons to do this sort of thing.

Edit: Tips for folks:

* When on elevation page tapping either the elevation scale or distance scale will bring you to a page where you can zoom the respective scale

* Long pressing on a data field will bring you directly to the list of data fields to choose a replacement for the data field you selected.

Thanks!
Sean

I agree about the hard buttons. The touch screen is useless to me... No matter what sensitivity I set up, it only reacts 1 out of three times. I have to press really hard on the screen to get it to work. In sunlight it changes screens when riding, I can't use it with gloves or when it rains. Actually I would say it is dangerous to use it in the traffic...

So yes, some buttons to navigate would have been nice. Hopefully in the next version... But again, I think my Garmin days are over....
  • The Garmin Remote (I believe about $49), which comes packed with the Edge Explore 1000, but is available for sale by itself, works great with the 820 (I tested it before returning my 820). If you otherwise like your 820, it's a worthwhile investment. The screen on the 1000 is totally responsive (and puts the 820 to shame), but I find I'm totally addicted to the remote now and can recommend it. In fact, if you're not changing data fields, you can just lock your 820 screen and scroll in either direction with the remote.

Great suggestion, it actually crossed my mind yesterday to look into it. Thanks for confirming ahead of time that it works. Do you ride with drops? Where do you have it mounted?

Also interesting about the 1000. I didn't want a computer that big, but maybe I should look into it? I also worry about it being easier to break than the smaller units. I accidentally unlocked my 520 the other day while moving at speed, it bounced on the road then into the grass and doesn't even show a mark.

Back to the shortcuts, on my Edge 520 I can hold the 'back' button and it will take me to the home screen. Is there anything like that on the 820?

Thanks for the helpful suggestion on the Remote!
  • I have drop handlebars and mostly ride with my hands on the hoods, with the remote on the inside of the handlebar, just below the bottom of the hood, where I can reach it with my thumb.

The remote has some limited programmability, so you can reset the stop/start button, which I'd rather initiate on my unit, to show you the map page or the elevation page (or other choices) -- which is sort of a cheating way to get back to the top level. I find a long press on the unit's back button also works on the 1000 (Explore) to get you back to the home page, but didn't work for me on the 820.

I had the 820 through software version 7.0 and wouldn't recommend it to anybody. But I'm really liking the Explore 1000. But a lot depends on your needs and preferences and use cases. Everyone's mileage may vary, and there are no doubt some satisfied 820 users. Here's a link to my Amazon review of the 820, which also includes some comparisons to the Explore 1000 and the Wahoo Bolt.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

Edit: The Explore 1000 comes packaged with the remote and a silicone cover that, although ugly, should give it some crash protection.

I lost an earlier Edge when it came off while riding. The 520 and 820 include a lanyard you can loop around the bars or stem to prevent it hitting the ground and getting lost. I recommend using it.

Ha! I always wondered what that the included lanyards were for. I thought it might have been there to suggest dual usage like for hiking as well. Thanks for that tip!

Thanks for the useful info. Tempted by the 1000, but don't want to pay the extra currently. I found an Edge Remote on craigslist yesterday and bought it. Hoping that will tide me over! Also, I reduced the sensitivity from high to normal on my touchscreen and it seems to be behaving better.
Really good Amazon review! Thanks for that. I returned my Bolt yesterday. Main two reasons were, no category selection available from the POI db (Restaurants, Gas Stations, etc) and the Climb screen. Climb profile is presented to scale so you can't see all the gradient variations even when on max zoom. I really do like the Garmin profile display. I've been using it on the last couple rides on the 820 and I'm not seeing the lag. Maybe they improved with the 8.0 software?
Thanks again for the helpful words.

Edited to add tips to OP...
