820 vs. 1000 vs. 810?

Folks:

I used to have an 810 and upgraded to a 1000.

The 810 was always problematic with regard to navigation. More often than not I would get a route calculation error halfway through a route.

I've had very little problem with the 1000.

When I upgraded, I gave my wife the 810 but didn't show her how to use navigation, because I didn't want her using it (low frustration point with technology).

So my question is: How does the 820 compare to the 1000 with regards to navigation? Is it comparable? Better? Worse?

If the 820 is at least comparable or better, I might get my wife an 820 so she can learn how to use the navigation and depend on it.

Thanks!

david
  • My best advice would be to see if you can beg / borrow a unit from somewhere and see how you get on with it from a navigation point of view. Perhaps you might arrange a money back deal with your retailer if you don't get on with it?

If you read through this user forum you will see many threads / comments basically complaining about the navigation function, and I'm sure some people will post similar in answer to your question. What you won't see is many posts saying it works just fine. I, for one, find my unit works as expected, with none of the reported issues other users experience. But, generally, satisfied users don't post in these sorts of forums.

My impression of the faults reported by other users, and this is just a guess, is that a common factor is either the map region being used, or Bluetooth pairing to another device whilst on a ride. I don't pair with phone (or other device) whilst riding( Bluetooth off), and I use the standard UK map supplied with unit. Of course, if this is the root of the problem(s), they shouldn't exist in the first place, and Garmin are at fault.

Other users will suggest alternatives from other manufacturers...
  • I also have an 810 that I really can't trust not to crash during a ride. I desperately want to upgrade but the 1000 is now 4 years old and there are plenty of reported problems on the 520/820. Those two are also getting a bit dated. As Mikew_66 points out, the problems aren't likely as common as these message boards make it seem. But there are clearly still plenty of issues.

Personally I'm waiting for this Fall when I expect Garmin to release a new Edge. Always risky with new products but I did just get an FR935 and it is the most stable Garmin product I've purchased. I'm actually just using my 935 while biking unless I really need full maps, at which point I take both my 935 and 810. This obviously isn't a solution for your wife. One big question is whether you can wait for a new one.

You also might be able to find a 1000 on a good sale. It seems like they were way reduced a couple months ago.
