820 v8 paired with Quarq DZero Power Meter - Calibration Prompt from 820

Hi

Please can anyone inform regarding the functionality of the Calibration Prompt, for the Quarq DZero Power Meter, from the Garmin 820?

This Prompt is seemingly enabled via:

820 Menu > Settings > Sensors > Power > Sensor Details > Calibration Prompt > Off/On

When the On position is selected when should a Prompt be issued?

In my case this seems to be, only for sure, following Software/Firmware Updates, whilst it happens seemingly randomly at other times?

Quarq say this aspect should be controlled within the Garmin Device.

Thanks for any useful input that is offered.
  • A prompt should appear every first connection after a 820 reboot. The prompt appears only once every reboot I think.

Yeah, mine is somewhat sporadic although I haven't tried to figure out when/why it appears. I feel like it has something to do with whether or not the Garmin is already in an activity mode already (i.e. not just sitting on the main menu screen) when the Quarq connects to the unit.

Either way, you can drag down the settings menu from the top of any screen and there's a shortcut in there to the "calibrate" page for any connected power meters; this is what I usually end up doing.

Thanks for the input, clearly this is a minor glitch that hopefully will be sorted.

However it is not a minor glitch to find that once again Garmin are hiding really useful aspects of a facility from their Customers

In the User Manual this is the extent of Calibrating Power Meters:

    Calibrating Your Power Meter
Before you can calibrate your power meter, you must install it, pair it with your device, and begin actively recording data with it.
For calibration instructions specific to your power meter, see the manufacturer's instructions.1
    Select > Sensors.2
    Select your power meter.3
    Select Calibrate.4
Keep your power meter active by pedaling until the message appears.5
    Follow the on-screen instructions.

No mention of other easier routes to Calibrating.
Seems like it has to be put down to part of Garmin's odd MO?
This is a pity because being presented with an opportunity to Calibrate easily every day, or perhaps every Ride, would be welcomed by many users.

The calibration prompt only comes up when you switch on the 820 from the 'off' state, not from 'sleep'.

The above is correct but it is seemingly not the 'only' situation that causes the appearance of the Calibration Prompt.
After using the 820 I put it to Sleep rather than using the Power Off procedure, this is to reduce the time taken to accommodate the requirements of all the Kit involved on a Ride and the Battery is more than capable of handling the Sleep situation.

Instead of referring to Software/Firmware Restarts I should have referred to Rebooting. After being Powered Off a Device needs to be Switched On so that Rebooting can take place. Rebooting remains the only sure way of invoking the Calibrate Prompt. However I have been aware of the following:

    1. The 820 has not been Powered Off and so only needed to be woken from a Sleep session.

    2. On a few occassions the 820 has responded as rapidly as normally experienced when it is woken from Sleep, i.e. not the delayed process of ....loading Maps........,etc. but it has presented the Calibrate Prompt. These events have occurred a few days [during which the Device has been used 6 to 12 times] after a Software/Firmware Update invoked Calibrate Prompt event Whilst trying to determine the cause(s) adequate time [at the being and end of each use] is allowed for observing the Device response(s).

My reasons for banging on about this subject is that Users would be best served if the Calibrate Prompt were to be presented at the beginning of every Use, regardless of whether the Start Point is Rebooting or Waking from Sleep. This would reduce the amount of time spent navigating menus and seems like a good idea to me.
