My screen has a halo around it that you can see when the backlight is off - like a film on the screen is delaminating from the edges inward. Is this something that I need to send to Garmin to replace?
My local garmin support said - "you should observe the screen". Support employee give me to understood that it's nothing wrong with screen. My screen looks like yours screens.
I noticed the halo effect a few weeks ago and it's becoming worse quickly - i've used it regularly for 11 months and wonder if it has degraded due to UV exposure or something?
Garmin confirmed they'll replace the unit with a refurbished model as per their stand terms in the UK, which includes a 3 month warranty. However, I'm concerned that this will happen again at which point i'll presumably have no come back.
It'll be interest to see how this issue works out as the bulk of the units age; if turns out to be a common design/manufacturing issue then surely Garmin should put a specific extended warranty/replacement service in place?
I'm in the same situation. Garmin are expecting me to send it back for a refurbished model (which I assume has, in turn, been sent back because it has/had something wrong with it) but I have little doubt that the same problem will occur again eventually. I presume it's not a coincidence that so many reports of this have emerged as the unit reaches it's 1st birthday.
Ironically the screen halo is probably one of the least annoying failings of this awful product - but as it's obviously getting worse and running out of warranty I have little choice but to bite the bullet and swap it out for a unit that might (based on reports on here) be even worse than the one I have.
Apparently I've used mine for 500 hours in total - and I probably first noticed the issue around the 300 hour mark. Would all the people reporting this issue happen to be 'heavy' users or regular users of 'night mode' by any chance? Another possible factor in my case is that I often have to leave the backlight set to 'stays on' (at 10-30% only) because of the amount of riding in the dark I do - primarily because I cannot reliably tap the screen of the device to get it to light up when I want it to (as I am still able to do just fine with my 7 year old 800)!
Gonna send my unit back next week :( - unless there's a reason not to i'll take the refurb offering before the warranty expires and keep my fingers crossed it's ok or there's a permanent solution down the line.
Unfortunately I doubt we'll hear Garmin's engineers findings but some reassurance about the long term situation would be appreciated. Either way, i'd encourage other affected users to share their experiences.
On reflection my device has had relatively light but regular year round use in the UK so not much warmth/sunlight [approx 200hrs over about 11 months]. I also use auto brightness in the day but keep the back light on low during winter commutes, which i have done with my ultra reliable edge 500 for years.
I finally sent my device back last week. No comment from Garmin but happily it was turned very promptly and the replacement appears to be a new unit as it was retail boxed with all the bits.
Did anyone else notice that the refurbished models seems substantially heftier than their original (and with much firmer buttons)? I was always struck by how light my 820 (bought at launch) felt - not in a good way, almost like it had no meaningful components in it at all! This new one, which I haven't used yet, feels more like a brick in comparison..
