Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect Distance to go Navigating a course

Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect distance to go. Navigating a course.
Garmin
When following a track (TCX or GPX) I quite often get a problem where the 820.
a) Stops providing Turn by Turn.
b) Gives an apparently random distance to go (to complete the course). Often longer than the course.
c) stoping and restarting the course has been known to fix it on rare occasions. But usually the turn by turn is wrong (some random next turn either near the beginning or the end). The distance to go may correct temporarily after a restart but will at sone point become incorrect.

Usually my routes are between 50 & 100 miles. The end is usually near the start (within 500yds). They sometimes cross themselves.

The garmin going wrong is usually triggered by either going off course or by being turned off or going in to sleep mode when I stop for coffee.

If I ride the same route twice it won't necessarily fail in the same place.

This is a real problem when I'm in a strange area.
Nick
PS - a friend has the same problem on his edge 1000

  • kingxlight,
I can't take the credit for this - another mentioned it and it seemed to fit with evidence I had from my rides. It seems to help but I don't know why, and I can't say it will always prevent the problems we are having.

Hopefully Garmin will have a proper fix one day.

  • Hi Nick,

    What, specifically, is your tip?

    Navigation Issue

Make sure your route does not return all the way back to the start. Have the end point be around 100 meters or so before the start point.

The credit belongs to ronniebryant as he figured this out as he was having the same problem on his 1000.

Just tested this again in my normal Sunday group ride, which has never worked from start to finish, no matter what I tried. Worked flawlessly using your tip. Even took a detour and it didn't cause any problems.

Ah. I've been doing that since 2010 starting with an Edge 705. I generally avoid having overlaps in a course to prevent the device from getting confused. Sometimes this requires creating two or more courses.
  • This has been dogging me as well on my Edge 820, and I got the same runaround from Garmin support: "no, never heard about that happening", and "use Garmin Connect to create the route - don't use RWGPS)".

Two rides over the weekend worked perfectly with the 100 meter rule. Recovered every time from intentional and unintentional off course excursions. Thanks for the great tip!

In my troubleshooting efforts before I found this thread, I set Recalculation to Off because it would get stuck on returning me to the point where I went off course even after joining the route at a later point. Is this intended behavior or another artifact of the bug that causes turn-by-turn to stop?

With Recalculation off, every time I went off course I was given directions for returning to course, but the route itself did not change. These settings are poorly described in the manual - do others have the same experience with Recalculation off?

I've left recalculation on and have found that if I go off course the 820 usually tells me to turn around but if I keep going to try to get back on the course somewhere further up the trail, the garmin will eventually re-calculate and provide directions back on my course further up the trail. This is the behavior I would expect from this feature.

Turning Recalculation off I would expect the edge to say you are "off course" but NOT provide directions back to your course. That is interesting that it will actually do so. If that is the case, I may try to turn it off to see if it improves performance.

**I've also updated all my courses so the start and end points are at least 100m apart. I haven't followed a course since but am hopeful this will end my issues losing turn by turn as well.

  • The problem with leaving recalculation on is that yes it will hopefully get you back on your route but it many times will recalculate the rest of your route into a completely different route than you planned. I think you will find that the majority of long term Garmin users have recalculation turned off.
