Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect Distance to go Navigating a course

Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect distance to go. Navigating a course.
Garmin
When following a track (TCX or GPX) I quite often get a problem where the 820.
a) Stops providing Turn by Turn.
b) Gives an apparently random distance to go (to complete the course). Often longer than the course.
c) stoping and restarting the course has been known to fix it on rare occasions. But usually the turn by turn is wrong (some random next turn either near the beginning or the end). The distance to go may correct temporarily after a restart but will at sone point become incorrect.

Usually my routes are between 50 & 100 miles. The end is usually near the start (within 500yds). They sometimes cross themselves.

The garmin going wrong is usually triggered by either going off course or by being turned off or going in to sleep mode when I stop for coffee.

If I ride the same route twice it won't necessarily fail in the same place.

This is a real problem when I'm in a strange area.
Nick
PS - a friend has the same problem on his edge 1000
  • Navigation Issue

Can someone who is having issues try this? Make sure your route does not return all the way back to the start. Have the end point be around 100 meters or so before the start point. This fixed my navigation issue on my 1000.

There's no magic in the format or the source of these files.

I figured as much. The main point I was trying to get across was I am on the new firmware and still having the same issues.

I'll give this a try this weekend.

Just tried this on my ride to day, and it was the first time it worked form beginning to end. Didn't make it easy for the device either. Did a U-turn and rode for a 1/2 mile before continuing on my original track. It was confused at first, but sorted itself after a 1/4 mile.

I want to try it on our Sunday ride which always has issues. See how I feel in the morning...

My Turn by Turn has mostly worked for me until last weekend. I use my 820 only for off road riding and mostly shorter courses 10 miles or less where I generally know where I'm going. I've gone off course before, and have seen the 820 freeze (or update slowly) until I got back on course. Either Turn by Turn resumed normally, or I just didn't notice it wasn't giving me turn warnings because I knew where I was going???

This past weekend I rode two 15+ mile rides in Kingdom Trails in VT and on the 2nd ride on two occasions I lost turn by turn notifications. The unit was still following the course but I wasn't getting turn notifications anymore. The first time this happened is when the course went down a closed trail so we detoured on another trail. I believe the 820 recalculated and got us back on the course, but I noticed after this I was not getting the turn warnings. The second occurrence was when we went off course on purpose to ride a double black diamond trail.

In both instances I was able to cancel navigation and start the course again (choosing NOT to navigate to the start of course). After restarting, turn notifications resumed and it worked normally. However, as pointed out in the beginning of the thread, the distance to the finish was reported incorrectly. With about 4 miles to go, the 820 was showing 12.x miles to go.

*** I do want to point out that after completing the course and saving it, my 820 prompted me to upgrade. So I was not on the most current firmware apparently when this happened.
  • It's working well.

Another big ride yesterday where it worked fine. A slight falter after I stopped at about 90 miles in. I turned off the Edge 820 and was off course while I had an Ice cream. When I restarted I thought it wasn't going to work as it missed the next 2 turns but then started working and got me home after 125 miles.

The end was approximately a 200 yds from the start. The route didn't cross at any point. I went off course 5 times and stopped and turned the edge off 3 times.

    Very pleased with it.

So, that is the key? My finish's should be 200 yds from the start? And what about the course crossing or overlapping at points? My latest course up in VT did overlap at a few spots, but it was not at these spots that the unit started to fail on the turn by turn notifications.

Regarding the finish being 200 yds from start, if my course is a loop that starts and finishes on a small trail section, can the start be in the parking lot and finish 200+ yards down this overlapping trail? Or do I need the course to finish away from this overlapping section?

From a previous post and what I just tried last weekend, the key seems to be the start and stop points need to be separated. 100 yards seems to be enough. Try to have your end point before your start point.

All my routes overlap as they are out and backs with some slight differences to account for traffic patterns. My garmin always lost turn by turn on the return leg (the unit was still tracking though). I tried this on my last ride and turn by turn worked all the way to the end. It was the first time it has done this. I had never ridden that course though, so more testing is required on known problem courses.
  • With Edges, I put the finish at a point that I won't pass close to on the outbound leg to prevent the Edge from prematurely congratulating me on finishing the course. If the outbound and inbound legs overlap over segments of the ride, I create separate outbound and inbound courses.
  • I try the tip from nickdodo and I have to say BRAVO !!!
Today trip from 73 Km, I made 5 huge out of track and indeed the 820 do what he have to do, soon I join the route the unit take back the right guidance and Km to end.
This is the best news those last months and I hope the Garmin guy's take the clue to resolve it definitely.
    Anyway thank you nickdodo
