How to install US maps on EU version of the 820

Hi, this has probably been covered before but here goes.

I am upgrading from a Edge 800 I have the MicroSD card with the US maps. I copied the "gmapsupp.img" to the location of the other EU maps, but it still says 'Unable to Unlock Maps' - any thoughts??????

FYI - I am already in queue to download from OpenStreetMap, I was just wondering if I am missing a step or if the 820 comes with a mapping limitation

Thanks for any assist. ~ Chris

Think I found my own answer....

DC Rainmaker has a post about map loading....in principle it should be the same for the 820 as the 520.

    2) Plug-in your Garmin Edge 520 to your computer.
    3) Within the \Garmin folder on the Edge 520, you’ll find the gmapbmap.img file (Disc Image File). Make a backup copy of this on your computer for long-term safe keeping.
    4) Within the \Garmin folder on the Edge 520, delete the gmapbmap.img file (after you’ve copied it elsewhere). Note: If on a Mac, you must now empty your Trash bin, otherwise you won’t reclaim the free space. This is not required on Windows.
    5) Copy the gmapsupp.img map file you downloaded into the \Garmin folder on your Edge 520.
    6) On the Edge 520, rename that map file gmapsupp.img to gmapbmap.img – don’t worry if you can’t see the .IMG extension, just rename it to gmapbmap, like below.
  • gmapbmap.img is Garmin base map, it makes no sense to replace it with some local map. To use your Garmin US map from 800 on 820 you may need to unlock it. Or, rather simple, download OSM map for your region. )
  • Those instructions are specific to the 520. The 520 is not really designed to have additional maps loaded on it. The only way to get them on there is to spoof the system by using the base map name.

This is not required on the 820 or 1000. You can use any file name for the additional maps you load.
  • It sounds like you have an old Garmin City Navigator (CN) map microSD card.

Those maps are locked to the device they are first used on, which means you might not be able to copy them (you'll get the "can't unlock" message).

The 820 comes with maps that are based on Openstreetmap data.

There are numerous sources for free (and current) Openstreetmap maps.

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ -> I think this produces ASCII maps.

http://extract.bbbike.org/ -> This produces ASCII and Unicode maps .

The newer Garmins might have problems with "Unicode" maps (if you get an "can't unlock" error, try ASCII).

You can download a small map to try it.
