Garmin Map Updates

Okay so I picked up my 820 about a year ago and found that some of the included Open Cycle maps don't list many of my local MTB trails. So, I've used free Open street maps ever since that are more up to date and do indeed include almost all of the trails.

However, My friend just got and Edge 1000 and reported that like the OSM maps, most of the trails ARE visible on the default maps on his edge. He said that he did install a Garmin update and map update via Garmin Express. ...And then I read here that Gamin updates the open cycle maps quarterly so I connected my 820 to my PC yesterday and installed the map update that was waiting.

The map update took about and hour and a half but after the update, the maps seem to be the same as my original maps and most of the trails that have been added to OSM more than 6 months ago are still not displayed on the latest Garmin maps. I'm happy to continue using the free OSM maps but does anyone know why the Garmin Maps are not updated with what is on OSM for over 6 months? Or why a newer Garmin map would include the trail but not the updated maps I installed?
  • The maps have version information inside.

You can see that in the map information list on the unit.

You can also see it using the "Device Manager" tool by javawa.

    http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

Note that the version numbers make it appear the map is newer than it is.

The paths just might be easier to see on the 1000.

All the units get the same maps (for their region).

Garmin Express might not roll-out the same versions to everybody all at once.

I'll check the map version listed on the Edge when I get a chance. But they trails are not easier to see on the 1000. They simply don't exist on my edge 820 unless i'm using open street maps that are updated. (actually some of them are there but the majority just don't exist on the Garmin Open Cycle maps.)
  • It's possible that the Garmin Cycle Maps don't list paths (ways that you need a mountain bike to use).

For mountain biking, I'd use maps from another source.

no they are all categorized exactly the same (pathway with bicycle allowed = yes) but whatever, I don't like the standard open cycle maps anyway so I'm using OpenMTB maps now.
