Different maps on 820

Hi all

The wife has just ordered me an 820 for my birthday.
I was going to get an 810 but after some research it seems it's still prone to crashing mid ride.

I've never owned a garmin edge as own a Bryton 35 and vivoactive hr.
On the 810 and 1000 etc it has a sd card slot for putting maps on can the same he done with the 820? it so how many Mb or Gb is a map?

Cheers

You might need to say what you want the other maps for.

The maps for all of North America or Europe are big. These take up around 6 GB.

The 820 has 16 GB of internal memory (the 820 doesn't have an SD slot). There should be more than enough room for multiple extra maps (as long as you are not completely crazy about it).

Usually, when people are going away to a place that they need a map for, they don't need a very large map (they don't need a map for the entire continent).

Many of the sources for maps let you create a map for just the region you need. The file sizes for these are small.

Using the map you need makes it convenient to get a current map and it's faster to copy to the device. And it avoids the size issue.

Hi thanks for reply. I am in the UK and would probs be only interested in putting so os maps on so I should be fine thank you. are the preinstalled maps any good on the 820?
  • The maps Garmin provides on the newer units (Touring, 1000, 820) are using Openstreetmap (OSM) data.

The quality of the OSM maps likely varies from place to place but I'd say, overall, they should be good.

I actually update the OSM maps (so I have a some idea of what the quality is).
