Feature request - turn off Wifi while in motion

I've been experiencing battery low messages, was wondering if the wifi function is wasting battery life while I'm riding? No need for it to be on when riding? Would be nice to automatically turn it off when in motion, and have it enabled when the ride has been saved.
  • This isn't the best place to mask for new features... Use the suggestion page at http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

I assume you didn't read this sticky in this forum about WiFi on the 820? (Hint: WiFi isn't active all the time)

  • Wifi is off during an activity.

Yes, but if you do not press START, it drains the battery all the time, also in motion.
Wifi should be disabled automatically during motion

What if you want to use wifi in a vehicle?

How many people use these on a ride without hitting start?

Actually when I look at the connection between my Edge 820 and my WiFi, sat on my desk and switched on but Start not pressed, I see this pattern (repeated, no more than once or twice per hour)

    23.02.17 16:16:00 Deregistering wireless device (2,4 GHz): Wireless device not responding, Edge-820, IP 192.168.100.39, MAC 14:8F:21:A0:60:DC, Name: Edge-820. (#0302).

Almost as if it wakes up, connects, checks in with GarminConnect, disconnects and goes back to sleep.

In the setting, you should have an option therefore to save battery - that does not mean, it is per default without wifi

But WiFi only becomes active periodically (looks like twice per hour, for about 35 seconds) now - even if it was on for a full minute that's 3% of the total time that it's on, for the rest of the time it's sleeping (97%). You propose a mode to change that sleep time from 97% to 100% (but add complexity to the codebase, extra drain whilst you activate the screen, press buttons etc).

The GPS function being active is a huge drain in comparison, so why start the GPS function before the activity?

Seems to me there are likely to be many more fundamental places to drive down battery usage than this exceedingly contrived case you describe.
  • Using a map without GPS - how do you navigate therefore?
  • Call me old fashioned, but I preplan and invariably know where I'm going... Satnav is an aide memoire, no more.

Point still stands on WiFi, it is active no more than 3% of the time and is unlikely to be the source of the battery drain you're seeing. It If you're that bothered, why not simply go turn off the WiFi? Settings > Wi-Fi > off
