820 Function buttons accessibility

Hey,

I've got a Garmin 510, been thinking about upgrading to the 820.

My question is with the 820 function buttons (lap & start/stop), are they hard to press with the "out in front" mounts that keep the edge sitting flush with the handlebars?

I feel like they could be given where they are and how close it sits to the stem.

Thanks

It's definitely a challenge to hit the buttons on the 'Bar Fly 4 Mini' out front mount. It's almost impossible with cold weather gloves and challenging without gloves. I haven't checked it on the garmin out-front mount yet.

The 820 does come with a new 'above-the-bar' mount. It feels like I have a shoebox sitting on top of my bars now.

    Haven't had a problem

I live in warm location and I wear a full glove in the winter. Though it's not very bulky, I have no problem using the button with the Garmin mount (included in the bundle) even using the heavy silicone Garmin protector (which I would recommend since the screen is glass. You do need gloves that work with a touch screen for the 820. I have some friends with the 520 that has a similar setup interface without the touchscreen and I would highly recommend the touchscreen.

The 820 software is buggy like all Garmin products, but fairly stable now. I occasionally get my sensors dropped and need to reboot the 820. But I really enjoy the upgrade from a 500.

I run a 120mm Zipp SL Sprint stem/K-Edge mount and the clearance is small, however doable (photo attached). Mostly tricky with full fingered gloves.
  • The standard Garmin mount raises the device up above the handle bars by 1.5cm or so in order to enable access to the buttons. If it were flush the lower buttons would indeed be inaccessible.
