Turn by turn nav depiction 810 vs 820

I used to have an Edge 810 with City Navigator maps on an SD card and have just upgraded to the 820 with the pre-loaded mapping.

On the 810 when approaching a turn you would be presented with a zoomed in depiction of the junction on the map as you approached, entered and left it. This would appear even when viewing another (non map) screen. I found this very helpful and reassuring, in knowing that I was taking the right exit of a complex roundabout, for example.

Now on the 820 this feature appears to be absent and instead generic symbols indicating which turn or exit to take appear, but without an actual depiction on the map popping up. To view this you have to switch to the map page itself by swiping to it.

Am I missing a way in which this old 810 feature can be enabled on the 820, or was this a features of City Navigator mapping only? As an aside, I know that the Edge 1000 has pre-installed maps like the 820 but retains the SD slot which is absent in the latter. Has anyone used an Edge 1000 and if so do you know if the feature above is available on that a) with internal or b) with SD mapping installed?

Thanks!
  • The 705 was not perfect. I ran down-rev firmware because the last two updates (3.2, 3.3) did more harm than good. Similar for a 500. The seeds of the problems with Edge devices goes way back. Garmin produces nav products for marine and aviation where the demands for reliability and robustness are much greater, as are the consequences if there is a failure. Somehow that level of discipline and rigor has not rubbed off on the Edge group. They must think of these devices as toys.
  • The 800 works well. It was a significant improvement over the 705.
  • Thanks for that. So far at least the 820 doesn't crash all the time and dump my ride data like the 810 did - and that is a feature that I can put up with a lot for!

What fw version do you have on 810?
I have 5.00 on mine and no crash for 6000 km ....with TBT active following courses
  • I was wrong

I see where I made the mistake of thinking the turn screen popped up like it does on other models. I was considering buying the 820 and viewed several Youtube videos and falsely assumed the screen showing the turns came up while on a data screen.

I keep thinking I need to upgrade from the 705 but these new models appear to have some navigation problems that I don't experience on the 705. The 705 has performed flawlessly for me on navigation and I have never had a corrupted file. I've been to many areas of the U.S. and the navigation has always worked even with out and back routes. Why can't this work on the newer models? The 1000 also appears to have navigation problems.

I'd certainly like a larger screen because these old eyes are having more trouble each year reading the map on the 705 but I guess I'll have to wait awhile longer in the hopes the next Garmin will actually navigate.

I went through 3 810 head units and all crashed when navigating, with various SD cards including one installed by Garmin. I can't tell you what firmware version as Garmin offered me a refurbished 1000 as a replacement so I've sent it off to them but I always had the latest update on there. Ironically I had just bought an 820 when the offer came through so now I will have one of each. Guess I'll have the chance to compare them myself now. Thanks for all the answers guys!

My great experience with this problem I have now solved. Basically once you’re set up correctly most do the TBT navigation. I have the 810. The fly in the ointment is the preloaded international baseline maps which ain’t worth jack. As soon as you download the Garmin City Navigator Europe NT: UK & Ireland all the problems disappear. It’s obvious really as a full international map will lack 90-95% of the details required for TBT navigation. I did this and downloaded the same route I constructed via Garmin Connect and Strava GPX and TCX (I think the acronyms are correct). All three circuits of the same route worked perfectly for the TBT navigation. Any issues with ANY technology do Google DC Rainmaker he is amazingly detailed on almost everything. Below is the link for the map download. Ensure you get the micro SD NOT the download.

Oh and do invest in the original map not some spurious one as it’s not worth the hassle for saving £15-£20.
