I've just switched to a Garmin 1000. My eyesight is such that the larger screen is a big plus and then there are of course the many things we have been discussing that are inherent 'features' of the 820.
The 1000 was a relative joy on my first 35 mile ride today. It is fast to switch on and fast to start navigation. The touch screen works reliably with both a finger and with touch enabled gloves. The screen is much easier for me to see. There were no glitches in the navigation. I went off track a couple of times - it calmly told me and then just carried on once I'd rejoined my route. It has a great feature where it displays the map page when you are within 100 yards of a turn point - this enables you to see data most of the time but switch to map when you need it. At the end of the ride, the automatic upload worked.
There is one downside which is battery life - I used around 40% on this 2 hour ride. I've googled and seen advice about dropping the screen brightness and a few other things and I will need to play with these. However, its a price I'm prepared to pay.
It is also a little heavier but I'm hardly optimal myself!
YMMV!
