How can Edge 820 be worse than the Edge 800?

I have an Edge 800, that I bought over four years ago and a recently purchased Edge 820. Surely one would assume as companies and their products evolve new products should get better, not worse!?

So if I turn off all the ancillary stuff on my Edge 820 (i.e. bluetooth, wifi, strava segments, live track etc) then surely the Edge 820 should not have any additional background processing routines compared to the Edge 800? So why is the Edge 820 not able to keep up with grade/elevation, navigation and touchscreen routines in similar fashion to the Edge 800 or 1000? It's time Garmin admitted the fault is either hardware, software or both.
- If hardware (is it processor or other component issue?) then Garmin need to suck it up and either refund/replace our units.
- If software then write some decent code, how about simply copy the base code/routines from the Edge 800, 520 and 1000 units.

I bought the Edge 820 for extended battery life (over my ageing Edge 800) whilst still having maps/navigation out on the open road. The continued silence from Garmin is getting rather ridiculous.
  • +1000. I "upgraded" for the same reason and am flabbergasted by the flaws in the 820. Slow redraw, inaccurate and slow gradient, touch sensitivity oddities, etc. Can't wait for Garmin to get some real competition in this space.

you ask " how can the Edge 820 be worse than the Edge 800".

to be frank that's a silly question.

clearly the answer is: "in OH SO many ways"

it was bad at first and then a firmware update actually enabled me to use it. (touchscreen)
now a subsequent series of firmware 'fixes' have made the screen unusable.

lucky I can resort to the buttons instead. PHEW!

oh yes. I can't. forgot. silly me

there is a silence from garmin

there is also a silence from well known reviewers

a few of whom have called out suunto after giving them a long chance with the ultra.
now is the time for them to use their independence and influence to help us and speak out on the 820

I've still have a 800 and 810 my 820 is better than both of them, it's not perfect but it shows promise and is getting better at each firmware update (as with every Garmin device I've owned), but then again I'm not experiencing a lot of the problems others are.
I wonder if re-loading the firmware would help, as I get the impression that the same firmware version behaves differently on different devices.

I only had to upgrade from my 5 year old 800 because the rubber seals had degraded around the power button and USB seal meaning the screen got covered in condensation every time it rained.

Of course, we now know that the 820 is designed for use in office based environments only (no rain, no sweat, no gloves, no cold hands, no traffic hazards to kill you whilst you wrestle with the unit) - even wrapped in cling film the 800 still works better!
