OSM-map activated but not displayed

I'am a newbie with the Edige 820 device and would like to run openstreetmap as displayed map on my Edge 820.
Thatfor I have downloaded my region from OSM, created an *.img-file and copied it into the "Garmin" file of my Edge 820, where also other folders (Activities, Apps etc.) are shown. In this root directory I have 2 different maps saved, gmapsupp.img (my downloaded OSM map) and gmapbmap.img (supplied by Garmin).
Then I have acitivated the OSM-map under Preferences > Acitivity Profiles > Training > Navigation > Map > Map information (choose your map) > OSM streetmap. In this folder, 2 maps are shown, INTL Standard Basemap, NR and the OSM-map. OSM-Map is enabled and Basemap is disabled. So far so good.

But now, when I start the "Training" and go to the 4th or 5th page, where the map is shown, just the standard basemap applies. :(

Do I have missed any step between acitivation the map (like described above) and starting the training?
What can I do, to get OSM-map running on my Edge 820?

I hope anyone can help me so far.

Have you changed the name of the OSM map you sent to the Garmin folder? If i am not mistaken, it should have the gmapsupp.img name.

Make a backup of the original gmapsupp.img of your garmin, and afterwards, copy/paste the OSM map you got and name it gmapsupp.img.

It should work. For me it did.

Forget my response, you said you changed the name of your OSM map to gmapsupp.img.

Have you tried resetting the device?

the file doesn't actually have to be labeled gmapsup for it to work with the Edge 820. you can also download a number of external maps and label them whatever you want as long as they are .img files in the Garmin folder.

But you should have at least 4 maps by default. The gmapbmap is the simple base map that is supposed to be used when you zoom out to a certain level. (the zoom level the base map is displayed at depends on what you have detail level set to on the Edge device. If you have a low detail level, the basemap will be shown until you zoom in pretty far. At a high detail level the default opencycle map will be displayed until you zoom out quite far.

Anyway, there should be 4 Garmin maps enabled by default. I don't have the device in front of me to see what they are, but if you have the Garmin Open Cycle map enabled, it will be displayed instead of your new openstreet map. So leave the basemap and the other Garmin maps enabled. Just disable the Open Cycle map.

Sure, the filename of the OSM-file is gmappsup.img.
The name of the 2nd/other map is gmapbmap.
Other thing I've found out: gmapbmap.img and gmapbmap.sum are located in the folder "Garmin". But, the OSM-map does not have a *.sum equivalent. Maybe this is the problem?

Ok, maybe this is the problem. I have just 2 maps in the "Garmin" folder.
But, the simple base map is taken by the Garmin Edge 820 for any kind of zoom level. From the zoom level with most details up to the level with lowest details. OSM will never be used.
  • Difficult to know why its not working since if you only have it and the basemap it should work. By chance do you have all extensions set to show?

I know occasionally there have been issues with folks naming a map xxx.img for example and have ended up with xxx.img.img which is then simply ignored.

If that's not the issue its possibly a corrupted map file. Run JaVaWa's device manager, check out the map and also confirm its covering the area you're looking at

  • It's a bit confusing now for me:
I have just the OSM-file left on the Edge 820 device in the "Garmin" folder. Exactly the same file, which runs on my Oregon 600 & 450 and it works on both. The other basemap file I have also deleted. But, the Edge 820 displays just the basemap file. Altougth the OSM-map is loaded, when I start the device. And OSM street map is activated, as described above.

I have already spoken with the service man from Garmin. They recommeded me to make a hard reset. Done, but does not solve the problem anyway.:(

The exact file name of the OSM-map is: "gmapsupp.img"

JaVaWa does not work with Mac Sierra OS. But anyway, the map file is 100% not corrupted, because I run it on the Oregon 600. The exact same file, just copied it form Oregon
  • Strange, I'm out of ideas too, maybe someone else can spot what is wrong.
  • Try disabling or renaming the basemap "img" extension. (You can "delete" maps by changing the extension.)

The name of the OSM map isn't an issue (it just needs the *.img extension).
  • Finally, I've solved the problem. I do not know, how, but the OSM-map appeared on the display after 2 restart of the Edge 820. Really confusing, but now it works.
The only thing, which does not work yet is my clock on the Edge 820 after updating to the latest firmware. I've already posted into the Firmware 5.10 thread but haven't got any answer yet concerning this. Maybe anyone here knows the solution?
