Does Edge 820 allow multiple custom downloaded Openstreet maps?

I've found that default Garmin Open Cycle maps to be a bit difficult to read for mountain biking in some areas so I've downloaded Openstreet maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and have also downloaded a few different style maps from OpenMTBmaps. I've saved all of these maps as gmapsupp.img and tried each of them individually on the 820.

The maps all have their strengths and weaknesses. (for example - the routable openstreet maps are easier to read then default maps when located inside a designated forest area. While the OpenMTB maps allow for easier to see MTB trails but sometimes don't display objects seen in the other maps.)

So my question is - are you able to save multiple files named gmapsupp.img to the Garmin folder so you can more easily switch back and forth between the maps? Or can you name the maps something else and have it still be available on the edge 820?
  • Just give them different names,. The single name limitation was something that existed on earlier units.

It's a computer. Just like any computer, you can't have multiple files with the same name in the same folder.

You can rename the map files to be anything (but they need the "img" part).

The map list you see on the Garmin uses names that are inside the file.

You can change those using this tool:

    http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

(Note that it doesn't appear to run on newer versions of MacOS.)

(I expect you know this but others might not.)

The units older than the 800 (the 705 for example) could only deal with a single map file. The 800 and later units set the timezone using a map (one had to set the timezone on the 705).

The newer units can even use overlay (transparent) maps.

The multiple maps is a cool feature of the newer units.
