820 no longer mounts as a folder following 4.10 "upgrade"

I upgraded to 4.10 and now (at least I'm pretty sure this only started post-upgrade) I can no longer mount the 820 as a folder. I.e., I plug in a USB cable and nothing happens, other than the 820 saying it's charging. I try turning the 820 off and on, try doing this when it's plugged in or disconnected from USB, try holding power down for 15s or so to make it really switch off, try different USB cables, different USB ports on my laptop, and two different computers.

I'm planning to send my 820 back. It has many other problems, which I can (unhappily) live with. But not being able to load new courses onto it is something I definitely can't live with.

Does anyone at Garmin actually ride a bike and use these products before they're launched on an unsuspecting (or naively optimistic) public? A public already suffering from the previous generation of deeply flawed and expensive Garmin bike computers :-( :-( What a terrible strategy - piss off the people who could be your core supporters. I hope competition will increase in this market. I'd love to have a decent alternative to Garmin. I feel deceived and ripped off.
  • Check that the pins are not damaged on the USB port on the Edge.

    You can try this

    Force to Mass Storage -
Turn unit off. Hold the lap/reset button while plugging the unit into the USB. Continue holding the lap/reset for 30 seconds and the unit should go to mass storage.

I had the same problem, when I plugged the 820 to the computer (while the 820 was already powered on from a previous workout. ) 820 did not mount and show up as storage, also Garmin Express did not recognize it.

After powering off the 820, plugging in the mini-USB port into the 820 and then the USB port into my mac, it mounted as a storage.

    Maybe this helps.

Pre-firmware-4.10 though, it would mount directly, also when 820 already powered on, so this is kinda irritating and does not seem intentional.

Thanks Alan. The port looks fine. It doesn't have individual pins, but a small piece of circuit board that goes into the USB cable.

I'll try the Force to Mass Storage. Can you tell me where you found that information? I don't see it in the online 820 manual at garmin.com

Thanks Bastosboi. I just tried that but unfortunately it didn't work for me.
  • I found it through a search of the Garmin FAQs

Hi Alan. I just tried that, but no joy. The FAQ doesn't list it as working on the 820, so maybe it's not surprising it doesn't work (for me at least). Thanks anyway!
  • The 820 uses the same reset and force to mass storage options as the 1000.

What type of computer are you connecting this to? Mac/PC, Windows 10...

I've tried this on two MacBook Pros and one Fujitsu laptop running Windows.

I just tried again, with no change. So I did a factory reset on the 820... and it still doesn't work :(

I'm just guessing, but it seems to me the 4.10 upgrade is likely responsible. What a pain.

    Thanks again Alan.
  • I have seen a few reports of the touchscreen not working after the update, but not of the unit not mounting.

As you have tried different PCs and different cables there is not really much more you can do. Garmin Support will need to help you out.

The USB should look this. I have seen people damage the port by pushing the connector in at an angle.

Hi again Alan. Thanks. I'm sure the port is physically fine - it looks perfect, and the USB cable connects to it snugly with no problem. The unit detects it immediately and starts to charge. So I don't see any problem there. I'm surprised others haven't run into this problem if it's a 4.10 issue - so maybe that's not the cause. I'll try Garmin support I guess, though I'm very tempted to just send it back.
