Edge 820 - Gradient does not work after 4.1 update!

hi all
I went for a 50k mtb ride today up several trails I know well. When going up hill, the gradient stays at 0.0% for most of the climb - then at most it'll jump up to 4% but never the actual gradient at around 8%. I get this when it's dry and in the rain.

anyone else experiencing the same issue?

...nevermind the fact the touch screen doesn't work with gloves on (I can see these issues being reported in a different thread)

this is terrible service from a Garmin perspective - sort out your firmware updates!
  • I've only had my Edge 820 for a few weeks, and loaded firmware version 4.1 a couple of days after receiving the bundle and noted significant lag/non-response of grade data (showing grade value of 0%) on my Edge 820. After reading the above, I rolled the firmware back to version 3.2, and last couple of days have noted the gradient data is still either slow to non-responsive for a 3-4km climbs averaging 6-8%.

So I don't think the error is just with firmware 4.1. I've loaded firmware 5.1 tonight and will watch whether the gradient data is a little more responsive over the next few days. Not really happy, as I ride a lot of rolling hills, and my old Edge 800 had no issue displaying/updating the correct gradient data every second.

Unfortunately, you are wasting your time, gradient remains broken with the 5.1 firmware. Bounces all over the place going from 0 to 6% on the local cat 4 climb. Pretty much worthless as a measurement at this point.

Hmmm, cycled to work this morning (~20km) and for most part the gradient did seem to update every 1-5 secs for the climbs. The 820 did update quickly from a -2% decline that quickly ramps up to +16% gradient, where I'm sure it was only displaying 2-4% with firmware 3.2 last week.

With long declines the displayed gradient was all over the shop, mostly displaying 0%. So far firmware 5.1 seems slightly better (but no where near as good as my ancient Edge 800) than firmware version 3.2 and 4.1, will keep an eye on it.

Gradient Display at 0 the entire ride

I have the 5.10 update on my Edge 820. Just got back from a ride and noticed the gradient displayed "0.0" the entire ride (and it wasn't flat). I've had so many problems with this unit I barely noticed this was a problem too until today..... seriously disappointing purchase.
  • Has this ever been solved? Still have the same issue with my brand new 820 running FW11
  • I’ve not had this problem on my unit. FW11 now and gradient displays correctly as far as I can tell. Some times a lag of a few seconds- which you’d expect IMO.

  • Not my experience at all. Compared to my 810, the lag is considerable. I can pedal up a steep (e.g. 9-10%) section of say 30-40 meters, and the grade hardly creeps up to 5-6%, if at all by the time I reach the top. On longer, steady climbs, it settles on the correct gradient, though.

I'm wondering if the gradient issue is something to do with the maps? I have the same issues - often showing 0% when it clearly is not.  There are 3 pre-loaded on my 820, and all are active by default. Should I be selecting just one?
