TCX or GPX with OpenStreetMap

Just have to quick questions, I tried googling but the results are confusing.
  • When I create a route do I save the tcx or the gpx file?
  • What site is better for creating routes, Strava, Ridewithgps?

Thank you in advance and ride safe!

An issue is that caught me out is that the route names are truncated within the files themselves and this is the name used on device. So although you think you have a unique file name for a route, it may clash with another one and as Alan said overwrite an existing route - thus making you think it has not uploaded. Sorry I can't remember the limit, but I'm sure Alan can.

Hi, thanks for that. Upon further investigation that was exactly my problem. I exported both gpx and tcx files from my rwgps route, so as a newbie I could see what if any differences it made to routing. However my filenames were too long, and the differentiator was lost.

Quite a lot to learn - and none of it in the Garmin manuals!

I use GPSies for creating GPX files. I find it easy to use. You don´t need an account and you don´t have to save anything before exporting the GPX file.
I save a GPX file to my Dropbox.
On my dynamic.watch account I import the GPX file.
On my 820 I've installed routeCourse. When I start the app on my 820 the created GPX lay there waiting to be ridden.

This procedure makes it possible to create routes on the fly with your mobile. You don´t nedd a computer nor cables. You can create it on the computer but you don't need to connect it to the computer.

I made a (poor) video on my procedure:

If you are satisfied with the roads in Google (in your area maybe all cycletracks exist in Google. In mine, OSM rules) you can use the mobile friendly site of dynamic.watch and make a route in your mobile.
When saving the route it instantly appear in your 820.

    Thanks!
I have not got much feedback on this one but perhaps people already knew about it, think it´s too complicated or think I´m too snobbish! ;-)

Anyway, I´m happy you liked it.
I talked to the developer of dynamic.watch and hinted I was more interested in Open Street Map with Graphhopper (like GPSies) for routing than Google that they are using on their web site.
He thougth it sounded interesting and should consider it in the future development.

DRJOSHUA, I have indeed continued to work on this and we have GraphHopper hooked up for testing internally on our website, testing all its relevant route types (road bike, mtb and hiking). Not sure yet when this will be released to be public, but be aware it will likely be a feature included in Premium as GraphHopper is not a free service in the activity volumes that we will require.

We also now have direct import from GPSies, as well as other import sources: https://dynamic.watch/help#sites

Thanks for putting in a good word for routeCourse!

I´m glad to hear that! I realized from the beginning that your development were dynamic!
I am looking forward to see what you have accomplished with Graphhopper. I think their service for routing (like at GPSies) is awesome and makes it worth keeping Open Street Map uptodate.

Maybe our posts deserve their own thread on a proper forum?

Please let us know when you have something to show us!

After using dynamic.watch and routeCourse for some months now I can say that i find it by far the easiest way to create routes and saving them to my Edge 820!
I´m using my computer, phone or iPad and it´s so straight forward and simple.
No using cables or fuzzing around copying files etc.

With several routing options (even on the phone) you are sure it will work great!
